The Ripon Area Community Theatre (RACT) is taking us back to the late 1950’s, with the jukebox celebratory musical, “A-Wop Bop A-Loo Bop,” by Mark Brymer and John Jacobson, August 11-13. Rock & Roll is taking the airwaves by storm and Roberta “Ruby” Lester and her friends are spunky teenagers with dreams of making it big in the music business. But sometimes dreams don’t go as planned. When the local radio station announces that “Rock ‘n Roll has got to go”, the kids take a stand for the music they love. Featuring such classics as, “Rock Around the Clock,” “Johnny B. Goode” and “Jailhouse Rock,” “A-Wop Bop A-Loo Bop” will make audiences want to dance in the seats. Performances will be Friday August 11th, and Saturday August 12th at 7pm, and Sunday, August 13th at 2pm, in the Ripon High School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 at the door and can also be purchased in advance at: https://www.showtix4u.com/event-details/75627. Ages 12 and under are free. “A-Wop Bop A-Loop Bop” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com The Ripon Area Community Theatre is a sponsored program of the Ripon Noon Kiwanis. “A-Wop Bop A-Loo Bop,” has been co-sponsored by Dante and Jennifer Houston. Henry was born in the Gila River Japanese Internment Camp in the Arizona Desert. After release from imprisonment, his family was recruited along with 2500 other Japanese internees to Seabrook, N.J. for resettlement. He attended the Stanford University Medical School on a scholarship and did his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. After his residency, he accepted a position as a radiologist in Wausau in 1975. Henry retired in 1999. (August 08, 2023) – The Green Lake Festival of Music and the Thrasher Opera House welcome Paul Dietrich’s 5+4 to the historic Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake, Wisconsin, on Friday, August 25, at 7:00 p.m. Paul Dietrich began writing music for his 5+4 project in late 2019. The group’s first (pandemic-delayed) performance came in late 2021. The group combines the instrumentation of a traditional jazz quintet (trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, drums) with a string quartet (two violins, viola, and cello). This was a new frontier for Dietrich, having never written for strings, but the larger format was not unique. After two live performances, Dietrich recorded his 5+4 music in early 2023, which will be released in August 2023. The band includes saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, pianist Jason Kutz, bassist Brian Courage, and drummer Jon Deitemyer. Paul Dietrich has been described as “an apt bandleader, an exceptional composer, and a superlative performer” (All About Jazz) and “a skilled composer” (JazzTrail), and his music has been praised as “stunningly beautiful” (Audiophile Audition) and “captivating” (Chicago Jazz Magazine). A composer, trumpet player, and educator based in the Midwest, Dietrich has led the Paul Dietrich Quintet since 2012 and the Paul Dietrich Jazz Ensemble since 2016. The Chicago-based Quintet has released two albums: Focus (2017, ears&eyes) and We Always Get There (2014, Blujazz). The Paul Dietrich Jazz Ensemble’s 2019 album Forward features guest artist and world-renowned drummer Clarence Penn (Dave Douglas, Maria Schneider) alongside many of the Midwest’s best jazz musicians, including Greg Ward, Russ Johnson, Dustin Laurenzi, Matt Gold, and Andy Baker. The performance is made possible by the Green Lake Festival of Music and Thrasher Opera House. This event is supported in part by a grant from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Tickets for Paul Dietrich’s 5+4 performance on August 25 at 7:00 p.m. are $25 and available at www.thrasheroperahouse.com or by calling 920.294.4279 Thrasher Opera House’s mission is to promote the arts and the power of live performance, provide a community gathering place, and preserve the historic Thrasher Opera House—a charming, intimate, friendly venue with excellent acoustics.
