The Larsen-Winchester Lions Club  Lions Breakfast will be held Sunday, April 7, 2019 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at Winchester School. There will be All-You-Can-Eat Pancakes and cash drawings of $50, $35, and $15. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to benefit future lions projects.

Advance tickets to purchase before April 7th are available at Leo’s Service Station in Winneconne, Melvin Mathison, CPA in Winchester, and from any of the Larsen-Winchester Lions Club members.

A benefit Hymn Sing is planned for this Sunday April 7 at 2:30pm at Community United Methodist Church in North Fond du Lac. It will be directed by Joshua Giese, Christopher Guy and Devin Scherck. Rev Tom White will accompany on the 126 year old reed organ with Sarah Conrad on the piano. Along with the singing of favorite old hymns there will be special music by the Peniel Quartet and a combined choir of Community United Methodist and Covenant United Mehodist in Fond du Lac. Te Bach (refreshments ) will follow. The free will offering will go to the historic Peniel Welsh Church renovation project.

The Film and Art Reception for Art on the Spectrum will be held Thursday, April 11th from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Thrasher Opera House. There will be appetizers, beverages, and a showing of the film “Temple Grandin” at 6:00 pm. All visitors should enter through the Thrasher Opera House gallery entrance at 510 Mill St. Green Lake, WI. The reception will be free of charge.

The Art Exhibit will be up for the entire month of April. The Gallery is open to the public Monday-Friday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm or by appointment (call 920.294.4279).

The Friends of the Ripon Public Library will hold its semi-annual used book sale from April 11 – April 13 in the basement of the library at 120 Jefferson Street.  Hundreds of books have recently been moved to the Last Chance Room and are priced at 25 and 50 cents, including a selection of large print books, while many audio books, CDs, DVDs, and trade paperbacks will be offered at steep discounts.  The Showroom contains a huge selection of newly arrived children’s, religious, craft, arts, gardening, and cook books.  A newly expanded Wisconsin section features books on local topics and by local authors. Credit card payments will be accepted throughout the sale, in addition to cash and checks.  The mission of the Friends is to promote and support public resources and community programs at the Ripon Public Library, and proceeds from the sale are used to support this mission.  In the past year the Friends have assisted with funding the adult, teen and children’s summer reading programs, the Makerspace collection, Pinterest Craft Club, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, books on CD, and more.

Thursday, April 11: Early Bird Sale from 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Get a leg up on the competition by attending the Friends of the Library used book Early Bird Sale!  Free for Friends members to attend, $3 entrance fee for all others, the Early Bird Sale will let you browse and purchase any of the books available.  The sale will then be open free of charge on Friday and Saturday.

The Leadership Oshkosh Class of 2019 will carry on the tradition of previous years’ classes to host a trivia night fundraiser to benefit Community For Hope, an Oshkosh-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting suicide-prevention awareness and education in the Fox Valley.

The event is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at the Fox River Brewing Co. Taproom, 1501 Arboretum Dr., Oshkosh. Participation is limited, so those interested in participating are encouraged to sign up soon.

One of the largest missions of the Leadership Oshkosh program is to make an impact in the community. Over the past two years, the Leadership Oshkosh Gives Back Trivia Night has raised more than $22,000 to benefit the Oshkosh Police and Fire Department foundations. This year’s beneficiary is Community For Hope.

“We’re excited to be partnering with Community For Hope to help support its mission in the Oshkosh community and throughout the region,” said Nathaniel Shuda, chairman of the Leadership Oshkosh 2019 Trivia Night marketing committee. “Suicide in Wisconsin is increasing at an alarming rate and is affecting individuals and families right here in Oshkosh.”

The numbers are staggering. The Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health reports 38 minors in Wisconsin died by suicide in 2017 — the highest youth suicide rate in the state since 1992 and the 11^th worst in the nation. According to the 2017 Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 16.4 percent of the state’s public high school students have considered suicide.

In addition to the trivia contest, the April 11 event also will include a variety of raffles and a silent auction. Sponsors include Bemis Company, Choice Bank and Community First Credit Union. Fox River Brewing Company’s Jay Supple Jr., a member of the Leadership Oshkosh Class of 2019, also will serve as a celebrity bartender for the night.

The Downtown Ripon Wine Walk is set to return on Friday, April 12. During the event, which takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, businesses throughout the historic district will become “tasting rooms” where attendees may sample up to 20 different wines throughout the evening. Numerous businesses will be open late during the event to provide you with an adequate dose of shopping therapy.

The Ripon Education Foundation is holding its annual door-to-door Scholarship Drive on Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14, 2019.

The goal of the Scholarship Drive is to ask every resident of the Ripon community to contribute to the scholarship fund, which supports Ripon students attending either two-year or four-year accredited colleges and universities. All money collected will be awarded as scholarships to graduating seniors at the Ripon High School and Lumen Charter School’s annual awards night on May 16, 2019.

Students from the Ripon Area School District’s high schools will be canvassing the community the second weekend of April to collect donations for Ripon Education Foundation’s scholarship fund. Students should be wearing orange fleece vests making them easily identified when they come to the door.

Since 1999, the foundation has awarded more than $150,000 to Ripon students headed for colleges and technical colleges. Last year, the Education Foundation awarded more than $8,000 in scholarships from the drive plus additional scholarships from other funds earmarked for scholarships.

Half the scholarships funded by the drive are awarded on a merit basis through the RHS scholarship application. In order to be eligible to receive a merit scholarship, a student must have participated in the drive at least two years. The other half of the Education Foundation scholarships are awarded through a lottery of student participants in the annual scholarship drive making it beneficial for all students to participate. All students who have participated in the drive are eligible for the lottery scholarships and have their names placed in the lottery draw once for each year of participation.

Residents who will not be home are welcome to leave a donation taped to their door, use the envelope left by the students to mail donations to the Foundation at PO Box 395, Ripon, WI 54971 or donate online at www.riponeducationfoundation.org. Donations made online are securely processed by our fund management partners at the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation. Contributions may be tax deductible – please check with your tax preparer.

The Friends of the Library semi-annual used book sale continues with a $3 grocery bag sale in the Last Chance Room – the Showroom is excluded from the bag sale.  This is your last chance to stock up until the next sale!  Because of the large volume of book donations received throughout the year, many of the books which don’t sell will be recycled after the sale and will not be here again.

The Roast Pork Dinner at Emmaus Lutheran Church will be held on April 13th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, or until gone. There will be a dinner of roast pork, potato salad, baked beans, rolled, coleslaw, and desert served. Funds raised from the event will be used for support of overseas missionaries. Emmaus Lutheran Church is located at W2185 CTY H, Poy Sippi.

Black Hawk Folk Society proudly presents Dan Weber Saturday, April 13 at 7 p.m. at Mountain View Community Center (at the 21st Lane and Highway 152 intersection near Mt. Morris). Weber’s career as a folk singer-songwriter took off with a standing ovation at the Sisters Folk Festival in 2010. His route to that almost instant success was circuitous and didn’t happen until mid-life, but those prior decades of life experience became his source for multiple cd’s worth of rich and varied material. And since that standing ovation, Weber has earned numerous awards for his songs which are often compared to Guthrie, early John Prine, and Harry Chapin, as well as delighted audience after audience throughout the United States.
