Thrasher Announces Changes to Harvest of Bargains Event

Green Lake, Wis. (January 29, 2024) – After more than 20 years, the Thrasher Opera House’s Harvest of Bargains sale has come to an end. The annual sale along with the dedicated volunteers who spent countless hours working on the sale, provided steadfast and important support during the early years of the opera house.

“This strategic move was made to allow the organization to concentrate on expanding its mission-driven activities and enhance its fundraising initiatives,” according to Thrasher’s executive director Rachael Avery. “We want to thank the volunteers who selflessly contributed their time and energy to make this event the success that it was,” she said. “We’re also grateful to the public for their generous donations and purchases that contributed to the success of the sale.

“As we embark on this new chapter, we look forward to your continued support in our mission-driven endeavors. Together, we can create a positive impact and enrich the cultural landscape of our community.”

The Thrasher store, located at 510 Mill St. in Green Lake, will expand into an extension of the Art Gallery. It will provide a space for local artists to display and sell their works. “If you’re an artist looking for such an opportunity, please contact us at info@thrasheroperahouse.com,” Avery said. Include contact information, type of work you want to sell/display and photos of your artwork. Examples that would likely fit well in the space would be paintings, textiles, sculptures, photographs, jewelry, prints, etc. “In addition, we will continue to accept a limited number of donations of original art and vintage items for the expanded gallery,” Avery said. “Please contact us first before dropping off items to determine if they would be a good fit.”

The mission of the Thrasher Opera House calls for promoting the arts and the power of live performance, providing a community gathering place, and preserving the historic Opera House—a charming and intimate venue with exceptional acoustics. Built in 1910, restored in 1997, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the opera house seats 200. For more information, please visit www.thrasheroperahouse.com.

    Memorial Donation Supports Literacy

The friends and family of Michele Schrader, who passed away unexpectedly on June 13, 2023, recently donated funds toward a collection of 27 VOX Books to serve and support aspiring readers. Vox Books are hardcover books with a digital audio player inside the front cover. This pairing of print with audio in a single unit provides many benefits for young learners as they progress toward becoming independent readers and lifelong learners.

Michele was a lover of learning and an advocate for literature as a catalyst toward living and experiencing the world with a creative spirit. Libraries and books, always near and dear to her, led her to become an active member of the Friends of the Ripon Public Library. For several years, she served as coordinator of the Friends’ famous book sales, which fund library programming. She was also a happy and supportive participant in library events and delighted in bringing her daughters to Storytime.

Throughout her life Michele’s zest extended into many arenas and along the way lifelong friendships were made. Most notable was her circle of friends which grew through volunteering with the local Welcome Wagon more than 35 years ago! Such friends and Michele’s family hope her legacy will inspire others to volunteer time and resources to their community’s free public library!

    January 31, 2024

Ripon, Wisconsin – The Ripon High School Drama Club is pleased to announce performance dates for its 2024 spring musical: Into the Woods.  Performances of Into the Woods will take place in the High School Auditorium (850 Tiger Drive) on Thursday, February 15th at 7:00 P.M., Friday, February 16th at 7:00 P.M., and Saturday, February 17th at 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. Tickets are available for $10 for General Admission, $5 for Students and Children. Tickets can be purchased in advance at sites.google.com/ripon.k12.wi.us/drama or in person at the box office at each performance.

“Careful the things you say; children will listen…”

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning story and music take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant show that is a rare modern classic.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.

Also in the woods, we meet Little Red, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf who loves tasty little children, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing after their loves. Choices are made and a price is paid to remove the witch’s curse. Everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, and sacrifices must be made.

One of Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with a reminder to “Be careful what you wish for.”

INTO THE WOODS Is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.  www.mtishows.com

Feufollet Unveils Musical Alchemy at Thrasher Opera House

Green Lake, Wis. (January 08, 2024) – Feufollet, the dynamic and youthful band from Southwest Louisiana, will play the historic Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake, Wisconsin on Friday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. It is a musical journey that transcends genres, embracing Cajun, honky-tonk, and string-band roots while exploring uncharted territories of modern sound.

Taking Cajun traditions as a springboard, Feufollet channels its vibrant energy and open-minded approach into its latest release, “Two Universes.” The album breaks free from the constraints of defining musical boundaries, showcasing the band’s evolution beyond their Cajun origins. The swamp’s whispers and time-honored waltzes provide a backdrop to a contemporary and expansive musical imagination, seamlessly blending blues, old-time, country ballads, and rock’n’roll into a harmonious symphony—all in pursuit of the perfect song.

Tickets for Feufollet’s performance on February 16 at 7:30 p.m. are $26 and available at www.thrasheroperahouse.com or by calling 920.294.4279

Willy Porter Returns to Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake, Wisconsin

Green Lake, Wis. (January 08, 2024) – Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Willy Porter will return to take
the stage at the historic Thrasher Opera House in Downtown Green Lake, Wisconsin, on Saturday night,
February 17, at 7:30 p.m. Porter has been touring solo and with ensembles of different sizes and shapes
for over 30 years now. Porter continues a musical and personal odyssey spanning over two decades, 11
albums, and multiple continents. His journey has been defined by an inquisitive love for humanity and
the language that describes what we all hold to be true. Porter’s songs weave a universal perspective
about human existence’s questions, struggles, and triumphs. His live shows are guitar-driven grit, soul,
silence, and muscle– at times electrifying, dynamic, and unique in the way that Porter’s voice blends and
fuses with his fretwork. A largely self-taught musician, Porter began treating audiences to his brand of
guitar playing and wry storytelling in the late ’80s while living in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1990, he
released his first full-length independent album, The Trees Have Soul, and his touring life has flowed
steadily ever since. Porter has logged millions of miles across America, Canada, the UK, and Europe
touring solo, as well as with various incarnations of the Willy Porter Band and in support of artists like
Tori Amos, Paul Simon, Jethro Tull, Sting, and Jeff Beck. The show will also feature opener Carisa.

The awarding of this grant indicates that the Thrasher Opera House’s programming and community engagement provide the highest level of excellence.

GRAMMY Winners BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet to Perform at Thrasher

Green Lake, Wis. (January 22, 2024) – For the past 50 years, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. They return to the historic Thrasher Opera House on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.

Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swamp pop, Zydeco, country, and bluegrass, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans to Carnegie Hall, then across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England.  Since becoming the first Cajun band to win a GRAMMY with “L’amour Ou La Folie” (their Traditional Folk Album – 1998) and then a second Grammy in 2010, “Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,” BeauSoleil has garnered many accolades, including twelve GRAMMY nominations.

BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet’s performance is supported by the Arts Midwest Gig fund, the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin, and the National Endowment for the Arts.  Tickets for the performance on February 23, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. are $30 and available at www.thrasheroperahouse.com or by calling 920.294.4279

On Saturday, February 24, at 10 a.m., enjoy a special outreach opportunity with BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet for a questions and answer experience in French.  This outreach will happen at the Caestecker Public Library at 518 Hill St., Green Lake.  This tailored experience invites French students and community members to engage directly with the musicians, explore Cajun music’s profound connection to French culture, and enrich their cultural understanding. Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to delve into the vibrant world of BeauSoleil and expand your musical appreciation! This event is free and open to the public. Thrasher Opera House’s mission is to promote the arts and the power of live performance, provide a community gathering place, and preserve the historic Thrasher Opera House—a charming, intimate, friendly venue with excellent acoustics.
