From September 13-15th, people from near and far will gather in beautiful, historic Green Lake WI, where storytellers will project a rare snapshot of Mother Earth and humanity onto downtown movie screens (Thrasher Opera House, American Legion, Town Square, and Caestecker Library). Last year our inaugural festival attracted over 700 people. Black Hawk Folk Society proudly announces its fall-into-winter Second Saturday concert series.
The line-up kicks off with Michigan-based Mustard’s Retreat on Saturday, September 14. This trio has been making music magic for forty plus years (either as the current trio or as a duo). Their songs, stories, and stage presence resonate with audiences everywhere.
Joyful, uplifting, intelligent, thought-provoking, insightful, original and timeless, Mustards Retreat is Libby Glover, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich. The trio met in 1975, performing together off and on throughout the late ’70s until a permanent move left Hough and Tamulevich on their own. Success and praise continued to follow the duo for the next 40 years, during which time they released a series of acclaimed recordings, traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6,000 shows. Libby moved back to Michigan in 2014, and found the old chemistry was still there, deepened by the years of performing, stagecraft, songs, and the abiding friendship they all shared. There will be a potluck before the concert at 6:00 PM.
October 12 brings The Society of Broken Souls to the Mountain View Community Center’s stage. This singer-songwriter duo—Dennis James and Lauryn Shapter—are known for consistent performances the critics have labeled “relaxed and deft, restrained and modest, but in the end always quietly epic.”
Small Potatoes, a Black Hawk favorite, will be back on Saturday, November 9. This Chicagobased duo will have you tapping your toes, nodding with the tunes, and heading home with a smile on your face, all thanks to superb musicianship and award-winning songwriting, paired always to their commitment to the folk heritage.
December 14 brings Bob Bovee (another Black Hawk favorite) and Pop Wagner. Both have loyal followings whether they perform solo or together. Original and traditional country western blues are their forte. They are one part cowboys and one part musicians. Don’t be surprised if they lasso your hearts and steal them for the night.
These four Second Saturday concerts will be held at Mountain View Community Center, at N3137 21st Lane, near the intersection of 21st Lane and Highway 152, near Mt. Morris and Wautoma. General admission tickets will be sold at the door from 6:30 on, with the concert beginning at 7:00. (Adults: $10; 12 and under: free). Concert goers are invited to begin the evening by joining the performer and other music lovers with a potluck supper at 6. Mountain View is handicap friendly and offers plenty of free, on-site parking.
Black Hawk Folk Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit and is completely volunteer-driven. The organization’s mission is to bring quality live music to central Wisconsin. Black Hawk thanks all donors and especially the following sponsors whose support makes this Second Saturday concert series, and other events, including educational outreach programs, possible: Louise Coumbe, Patricia Grant, Janet Scalpone, the Dick Hansen Family, Paul & Betty Hagan, Conners/Barrett & Company LLC, Mt. Morris Mill Coffee Shop, and The Frey Family Foundation. For more information about this concert, to learn how to become a sponsor or how you can support Black Hawk in other ways, please visit blackhawkfolk.org or check out Black Hawk’s Facebook page. Waushara County is home to 20 miles of beautiful off-road hiking on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. One beloved segment of the Trail travels through and around Bohn Lake State National Area. Bohn Lake is one piece of a 14-mile long glacial tunnel channel, created by a meltwater river flowing beneath glacial ice whose outlet was where the Village of Hancock stands today. The Ice Age Trail weaves in and out of this tunnel channel, opening for interpretation the subglacial flow of water which carved the landscape. September 18th-22nd volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in a trail building event on the Bohn Lake segment of the Ice Age Trail. During the event, which is part of the IATA’s Mobile Skills Crew program, volunteers will help build an elevated boardwalk, stone steps and retaining walls, and close to a mile of sustainable footpath. Help is also needed cooking meals, removing invasive plants, updating and installing trail signage, and addressing existing trail maintenance needs. No previous experience is necessary, and there will be roles for all ages and abilities. Volunteers will gather Wednesday through Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. at Hancock Park, which serves as project basecamp. Trail work ends around 4 p.m. each day and at noon on Sunday. The IATA provides meals, tools, and a place to camp for free to all who volunteer. There is no obligation to stay for the entire event, but many do because of the fun atmosphere and camaraderie that develop throughout the project. If you’d like to join us, please help the Ice Age Trail Alliance plan for your needs by registering online at iceagetrail.org/event/mobile-skills-crew-trailbuilding-event-bohnlake-segment-waushara-county-sept2019-2/.
