POLICE INVESTIGATING INMATE DEATH AT TAYCHEEDAH CORRECTIONAL

The State Corrections Department says an inmate at Taycheedah Correctional Institution in Fond du Lac was found dead in her cell. The Fond du Lac Police Department is investigating what Police Chief Aaron Goldstein confirmed was a homicide. Correctional Officers found 68-year-old Cindy Schulz-Juedes unresponsive in her cell on Wednesday. She had apparently suffered severe head trauma. Fond du Lac Police and Fire and Rescue were called to the scene but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. The investigation is in its preliminary stages. In October 2021 a Marathon County jury found Cindy Schulz-Juedes guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and resisting or obstructing an officer. In June of last year she was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Her husband, Kenneth Juedes was found shot to death in August of 2006. He was 58-years-old at the time. Criminal charges were not filed until 2019. Prosecutors say money was the motive for the shooting. Schulz-Juedes was in the process of appealing her conviction.

LEARN HOW TO USE NARCAN

Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner urges those who use drugs or the families of those that do to get training in how to use Narcan. He says one of the saddest aspects of a drug overdose death his department investigated is that no one lifted a finger to help the 18-year-old Ripon man when he was overdosing. Instead when it happened on April 7th he was taken outside of a home and dumped on a sidewalk. He says state law offers some protection for those reporting an overdose. He says beyond that Narcan and Narcan training is available through the Fond du Lac County Health Department and is even available over the counter at pharmacies.  He notes they would rather not be investigating someone’s drug death, but if they do someone is going to be held accountable. In this particular case five people were charged, four of them with first degree reckless homicide.

NATURAL GAS LEAK REPORTED IN PORTAGE

Columbia County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Koch says approximately 1,000 Alliant Energy customers were affected by a natural gas leak Thursday. It started at 8:49 am when the Portage Fire Department was dispatched to the 300 block of Washington Street for a natural gas leak that occurred when a line was struck. The leak was stopped, but caused an outage. Alliant Energy officials say areas without natural gas were in the southeast part of the city, south of the downtown, as well as the east side of the city and included the Saddle Ridge development along State Highway 33. It also affected the County Administration Building, Health and Human Services building, Law Enforcement Center, County Jail, and County Huber Center. Alliant had to repair a pipe and afterwards crews were going door-to-door to restore gas service to customers.

ROUNDABOUT POSSIBILITY AT FDLCO HWY TC AND STATE HWY 26

The State may provide Fond du Lac County with funding to put in a roundabout at County Highway TC and State Highway 26. County Executive Sam Kaufman says County Highway Commissioner Tom Jahnke had learned about the possibility from the state. Kaufman who lives not far from the dangerous intersection says measures had been taken including rumble strips to get motorists to slow down, but it wasn’t enough as people approached that stop sign. Kaufman says he’s in favor of a roundabout there hoping that would get truckers to take Highway 151 over to Fond du Lac to get on Interstate 41 rather than getting on or off the Interstate at State Highway 26. Kaufman says he talked to Jahnke about making sure the roundabout was well lit and signed if it is put in.

LOVE MY LIBRARY

The Ripon Public Library has launched its Love My Library Business Partnership program. They are asking local businesses to show their support for the library and help them close the first phase of the capital campaign. With both the interior and outdoor renovations planned the library will be a showstopper location in downtown Ripon. The total cost of this phase for the interior renovations is $800,000. Mandy Kimes is a Campaign Committee member and Chair of the Love My Library segment. She says they have now raised more than $675,000 toward their goal. They are hoping to close the gap so they can go to bid in September. For a total gift of $2,000, a local business will receive permanent recognition at the library in a special area along the enlarged windows that will display a stunning view of Silver Creek. Knuth Brewery is the first Love My Library Business Partner. As a member of the campaign’s Honorary Committee, Dave Knuth supports the library, knowing its impact on the downtown.  For more information on how to become a partner or the campaign contact Desiree Bongers, Library Director, at 920-748-6160.
