Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin Gives $585,000 in Visionary Grants

Stevens Point, Wisconsin (January 6, 2024) – The Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin (Community Foundation) recently awarded $585,000 over the next 5 years in Visionary Grants to 13 organizations that will enhance Portage and Waushara Counties now and for future generations. Our multi-year Visionary Grants are for organizations looking to adopt transformative operational structures or expand and enhance existing services. The goal of multi-year committed funding is that at the end of the grant’s lifecycle, the changes will be embedded into the organization’s own budget and operations.

“We are excited about the first cohort of grantees and the shared learning we will be able to engage over the next five years,” remarks Sarah Ross, Director of Community Grants at the Community Foundation. “Our Grants Committee have chosen organizations with varying budget sizes, staff size, and years in operation. We are eager to see how multi-year funding may spark innovative ideas to bring long-term sustainability to these valuable organizations.”

Since 2007, we’ve worked to meet local needs and help break the cycle of poverty. Families know they can turn to us for support during tough times. Often, those who’ve been helped come back to donate so others can get the help they need, too, with dignity,” Roseann DeBot, Executive Director, Operation Bootstrap.

HISTORIC THRASHER OPERA HOUSE TO HOST FILM SERIES IN 2025

Green Lake, Wis. (January 06, 2025) – Join us for an exciting Film Series at the historic Thrasher Opera House, where stories come alive on the big screen! Whether you are a movie buff or just looking for a cozy night out, this series has something for everyone.

Our first film will be held on Thursday, February 06 featuring the documentary Jazz Fest – A New Orleans Story. The film weaves together live performances and interviews from the 50th anniversary of the iconic festival, featuring some of the biggest names in the music industry, along with a wealth of archival documentary footage from the past half century. This film not only captures the festival in all its beauty and glory, but also delves deep into the rich culture of The Big Easy.

Thrasher Opera House presents the film FEBRUARY on Monday, February 24. A recent Mexican immigrant (David Ezekiel Duran) struggles to fit into a small town in Wisconsin in winter, until discovering ice fishing. Winner of a “Golden Badger” at the Wisconsin Film Festival and part of the “Year Project,” a film series based on each month of the year all set in Wisconsin. “February” is a film written and directed by Nathan Deming as a part of the “Year Project” – A Q&A with the director will occur after the film.

On Thursday, May 29th we will feature the film The Low – Phe Life by Kurt Sensenbrenner. The Low-Phe Life is an animated-documentary-comedy series about living with PKU—a rare metabolic disorder. PKU or phenylketonuria inhibits a person’s ability to break down protein. People with PKU, like Kurt Sensenbrenner the series’ director, must adhere to a strict low protein diet of fruits and vegetables, and drink a supplemental formula multiple times a day for their entire life to avoid serious neurological and physical side effects. For reference a non-PKU person consumes about sixty grams of protein per day, Kurt can only have seven. May is also PKU Awareness Month. A Q&A with the director will occur after the film.

All movies are free to attend. Doors open at 5 p.m., Showing at 6 p.m., our bar will be open to purchase drinks.

Thrasher Opera House’s mission is to promote the arts and the power of live performance, provide a community gathering place, and preserve the historic Thrasher Opera House. Built in 1910, restored in 1997, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is a charming, intimate, and friendly venue with excellent acoustics, seating two hundred.
