Ripon Noon Kiwanis display of “cozy mysteries”

    All day
    January 25, 2024

When it’s cold outside a cozy mystery (lighthearted, with little violence) is just what the doctor ordered! The Ripon Noon Kiwanis wants you to drop in at the Ripon Public Library to browse a delightful display of “cozy mysteries” near the fireplace throughout the month of February, as part of their 100th anniversary celebration.

To launch “Cozies & Cookies Month,” the Noon Kiwanis will be hosting a get-together Saturday, February 3rd from 10am-Noon in the Silver Creek Room, the Ripon Public Library. There’ll be an opportunity to browse this diverse genre while enjoying cookies, warm beverages, and guest speakers; plus, door prizes and giveaways!

At 10:30 AM, guest speakers, aka local mystery buffs, will offer literary analysis, favorite quips from their own favorites, and welcome discussion from attendees.

Following the reception, each Monday evening in February enjoy cookies and warm beverages at the Ripon Library from 4-8pm, courtesy of the Ripon Noon Kiwanis, while exploring the “Cozies” display. There will also be opportunities throughout February to enter to win book prizes and a free mug while supplies last.

The Ripon Noon Kiwanis Club has been serving the community since 1924! In celebration of a century of service, the Noon Kiwanis has plans for activities each month in 2024; including a Mystery Spaghetti Dinner in March to benefit the RASD student needs fund, and a Community Art Show in April! The full schedule for the RNK’s centennial activities can be found on their website at https://riponnoonkiwanis.org/centennial

    .

The Ripon Noon Kiwanis meets at Noon the 1st Tuesday of each month in the PDR at the Ripon College Pickard Commons. Guests are always welcome.

MIDWEST GYPSY SWING FEST ON THE ROAD COMES TO GREEN LAKE

Green Lake, Wis. (December 27, 2023) – The Midwest Gypsy Swing Fest is heading to Thrasher Opera House on January 26, 2024.  Catch a sampling of the wildly successful MGSF, hosted semi-annually in Wisconsin for the past 20+ years.  Featuring some of the world’s best gypsy jazz artists year after year, this year, it features three artists.

Hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, Harmonious Wail are purveyors of Americana-infused Gypsy Jazz, who for over 30 years have taken their listeners on a ride via the music of the Hot Club sounds of Parisian cafes, to the deepest blues of the Memphis Delta, to the heartfelt folk scenes across every-town-America lifting spirits all along the journey.

Singer and guitarist Leïla Duclos, visiting from France, is a rising star on the international jazz scene. This young artist has always been immersed in the universe of Django Reinhardt and Ella Fitzgerald. She performed on the famous musical stages of the Parisian milieu. She traveled to festivals worldwide, showcasing the extent of her musical personality, particularly the astonishing virtuosity of her scat.

One of the world’s most respected exponents of Gypsy Jazz guitar since Django Reinhardt, Englishman Robin Nolan, will join us from his current home base in The Netherlands.  After a career-altering visit to the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois-Sur-Seine, France, in 1991, Robin relocated to Amsterdam and fully embraced the gypsy way.  Nolan’s freedom to play wherever and whenever he liked in the streets of Amsterdam led to a whole new artistic independence and his virtuosity today.

Tickets for the performance on January 26 at 7:30 p.m. are $25 and are available at www.thrasheroperahouse.com or by calling 920.294.4279

Thrasher Opera House’s mission is to promote the arts and the power of live performance, provide a community gathering place, and preserve the historic Thrasher Opera House—a charming, intimate, friendly venue with excellent acoustics. Built-in 1910, restored in 1997, and on the National Register of Historic Places. Seats 200.  For more information, please visit www.thrasheroperahouse.com

Comedian Johnny Beehner Comes to Thrasher Opera House on Jan. 27

Green Lake, Wis. (December 26, 2023) – Johnny Beehner puts on a good, clean show that will leave you in stitches. He gives you everything you want from a comic: silliness, likeability, and a whole lot of fun. He’ll perform at the historic Thrasher House in Green Lake, Wisconsin, on Saturday night, January 27, at 7:30 p.m.

With a background in improvisational theater, including training at Chicago’s prestigious Second City and the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles, Johnny brings a unique style to the stage. He made his network television debut in January 2015 as one of the last comedians to appear on the Late Show with David Letterman. He has also made numerous appearances on FOX’s Laughs and AXS’s Gotham Comedy Live and regularly appears on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show. His comedy can be heard regularly on XM/ Sirius Satellite radio.

Charlie Kojis will join Johnny.  Charlie Kojis has been performing stand-up comedy since 2014, during which time he has been described as “this generation’s Charlie Kojis.” Combining his life experiences and general fears, Charlie blends traditional joke telling with his own personal narrative. His dry delivery leaves audiences both laughing and wondering if he is as okay as he pretends to be. Based in Madison, WI, Charlie performs throughout the Midwest and has performed in the Flyover, Limestone, and 10,000 Laughs Comedy Festivals, among others. He has opened for comedians who include Tig Notaro, Nate Bargatze, and Michael Che and was the winner of Madison’s Funniest Comic Competition at Comedy on State in 2016. He released his debut comedy album and special, A Normal Amount of Pain, in May 2023.

Tickets for the show on January 27 at 7:30 p.m. are $30 and available at www.thrasheroperahouse.com or by calling 920.294.4279
