Paul Thorn Band to Play Two Sold Out Shows at Thrasher Opera House
Green Lake, Wis. (May 15, 2023) – Singer/Songwriter Paul Thorn returns to Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake, Wisconsin, for two sold-out shows on June 1 and June 2. Thorn has been making music for over two decades, releasing critically acclaimed albums and touring the world with his band. He has shared the stage with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, and Sting and has been praised for his soulful voice, powerful songwriting, and electrifying live shows.
He is set to release his latest album, “Never Too Late to Call,” on June 23, 2023, via his own Perpetual Obscurity Records label. The album features ten new original songs that showcase Thorn’s signature mix of Americana, roots rock, and blues.
“Never Too Late to Call” was produced by Thorn and Grammy-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, John Prine) and recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis, TN. The album features guest appearances from legendary bluesman Bobby Rush and singer-songwriter Nikki Lane. “I’m excited to be hitting the road again and sharing these new songs with my fans,” says Thorn. “This album is about second chances and never giving up on yourself. I think we could all use a little bit of that right now.” Condon Total Comfort, Guaranty Closing & Title Services, KH Jankowski Construction, Adams Rib, & Emmer Real Estate sponsor Thorn’s performances. Artist hospitality is courtesy of Goose Blind Grill & Bar, Murphy’s on Green, and Creative Contractors. The Alfred T. Peck Jr. Fund, a grant from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, also supports this show.
Thrasher Opera House’s mission is to promote the arts and the power of live performance, provide a community gathering place, and preserve the historic Thrasher Opera House—a charming, intimate, friendly venue with excellent acoustics. Built-in 1910, restored in 1997, and on the National Register of Historic Places. Seats 200. For more information, please visit www.thrasheroperahouse.com =30=
The Ripon Kiwanis clubs are thrilled to announce the launch of our official fundraising campaign for a brand-new, all-inclusive playground at Riggs County Park!
The Early Bird and Noon Kiwanis Clubs will be holding an information and talkback session Tuesday, June 6th at 5:30, in the Ripon High School Community room; where members of the community can learn all about the project, ask questions and find out how they can get involved.
The playground will be located directly adjacent to the Kiwanis splash pad for easy access. Ground prep is scheduled to start later this year with installation of the equipment starting the following spring or summer.
Research findings have consistently shown the incredible benefits of inclusive playgrounds. They foster social interaction, promote physical activity, and enhance cognitive development among children of all abilities. By supporting our campaign, you can help us make these advantages accessible to every child in our community.
Gary Scholtens, president of the Noon Kiwanis club says, “Investing in an inclusive playground is not just about creating a space for play, but about building a world of acceptance, equality, and boundless possibilities. It is a testament to the power of diversity, where every child can explore, connect, and thrive, knowing that their unique abilities and differences are celebrated. Inclusive playgrounds not only unlock the joy of childhood, but also cultivate empathy, understanding, and a brighter future for all.”
Did you know that the nearest all-inclusive playground is currently located a half hour away? Together, we can create a playground that caters to the needs of all area children, regardless of ability or background. For the past two years, the Kiwanis clubs have been working closely with Terry Dietzel from Fond du Lac County on plans and budgets.
Let’s join hands and build a place where children can come together, play, and grow without any barriers. Look for announcements of upcoming events where you actively be a part of the campaign. Donate today to help us reach our fundraising goal and make the dream of an all-inclusive playground a reality.

Help Ripon Public Library “Think Outside the Books”
Ripon, WI – The Ripon Public Library is developing a new strategic plan for library services and your input is needed to help the library shape its services to meet the needs of our community. Please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RiponPL to take the survey or stop by the library for a paper copy. The survey should take about 10 minutes and responses are anonymous. In addition to the survey, staff are meeting with individuals and community leaders and will be holding a community conversation on Thursday, June 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Silver Creek Room. Strategic planning updates will be shared on social media and in the library’s newsletter.
The library has been a pillar of the Ripon community since 1898 when it was built on land generously donated by the Nash family. The plans for interior renovations and outdoor updating will make it a showstopper location – a place the entire community will use with pride. With the renovations, there will be an increase in foot traffic to the library; other libraries have seen a 40% increase. “This will benefit our downtown businesses and retail stores. It is a solid return on investment with significant economic benefits,” said Mandy Kimes, Ripon Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.
The interior renovations will include a welcoming and efficient entryway, interactive play area for children, teen hangout spot, enlarged windows displaying a stunning view of Silver Creek, a new computer and study alcove, three additional enclosed collaboration spaces, and accessible family-friendly restrooms. The cost of the interior renovations is $800,000. In addition to the interior, the library is also planning to update the outdoor space increasing both accessibility and usability. The new outdoor space will be much easier to maintain; the annual cost is estimated to be $3,000 and will be covered by donations to the Ripon Public Library Fund. The total cost of the entire project is $1,800,000. The library is seeking grants for a portion of these costs.
The “Thinking Outside the Books” campaign capital has now raised $600,000 of the $800,000 needed for this first phase. “We are very pleased to have reached 75% of the first threshold goal; this includes 155 Extraordinary Women who donated to fund the new entryway. We hope the community will help us get over the top by August so we can begin construction in early fall,” said Andrew Prellwitz, past Library Board President and a member of the Campaign Committee. Peter Sensenbrenner, also a Campaign Committee member, added, “We are very appreciative of the support to date, but we are not quite finished yet.”
Goals for both indoor and outdoor improvements represent what is most important to this community: creating inclusive and welcoming spaces, using adaptive designs to meet future needs, expanding the programming area through the creative use of space, and becoming a destination for fun, natural beauty and programming from dawn to dusk.
There are many ways that you, your family or your business can be involved. Visit the library’s website https://riponlibrary.org/renovation/ to make a gift or contact Desiree Bongers dbongers@riponlibrary.org to set up a meeting with one of the committee members for more information and to discuss the way you can include your name on an area of the renovated library.
For more information contact Desiree Bongers at 920-748-6160.

Rebel Alliance Theatre presents I Am My Own Wife By Doug Wright June 9, 10, 16, 17 First Congregational Church Oshkosh, 137 Algoma Blvd Tickets: https://ko-fi.com/rebelalliancetheatre/shop
June is Pride Month, a fitting time for artists to explore ideas about identity, representation, and the experience of marginalized groups suffering both personal and systemic persecution. On June 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th, the artists of Rebel Alliance Theatre will address these themes in their first post-pandemic production,”I Am My Own Wife” by Doug Wright.
“I Am My Own Wife”, a 2004 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize Winning play, chronicles the story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, whom Doug interviews in post-reunified Germany while revelations on Stasi collaborators keep making headlines. A trans woman (self-described “transvestite” per the language available at the time), Charlotte survived Nazi Germany and then life in the GDR under the Soviets, wearing skirts instead of carrying a gun. “You are teaching me a history I didn’t know I had,” Doug tells Charlotte. But what sort of negotiations does a person have to make to live authentically? In 2023, Russia is invading Ukraine and the rights and the very existence of trans people is up for debate all over the United States. Marginalized groups are experiencing mass invasions of privacy, strict legislation, and the outright banning of the self expression that would allow them to be their true selves in public. In East Germany during the rule of the Stasi and the USSR, there were mass invasions of privacy, strict legislation and terror tactics to keep people in line. We must know our history so that we do not repeat it.
A single-actor piece, Rebel Alliance Theatre core member Keegan Burnett-Connelly performs over 40 roles including those of Doug and Charlotte. Performances take place on June 9th, 10th, 16th, and 17th at 7PM( house opens 6:30 PM) in the lower level of First Congregational Church Oshkosh, 137 Algoma Blvd. Tickets for “I Am My Own Wife” can be purchased at box or online at (site), starting at $18 (box office will have a sliding scale of $18-25 per ticket); there are 24 seats per performance. Due to the sensitive nature of the play, there are themes and language that may upset certain viewers. This play is for mature audiences only. Viewer discretion is advised. Follow Rebel Alliance Theatre on Facebook for more info.
Would you like to help Rebel Alliance create the magic that is live theatre? The auditions for the rest of Rebel Alliance Theatre’s LGBTQ+ 2023 program will be held on June 26th and 27th at 6:30 pm in the lower level of the First Congregational Church in Oshkosh. Watch the Rebel Alliance Facebook page and website for more information.

Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom Film Screening & Discussion
Event Location:
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 217 Houston Street, Ripon, WI 54971
Event Date:
06.21.2023
Start & End Time:
Start time: 6 p.m., End time: approximately 7:45 p.m.
Event Details:
Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom Film Screening RIPON — St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Ripon welcomes all community members to a free screening of Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom followed by a discussion on Wednesday evening, June 21 at 6 p.m. Attendees are welcome to bring finger foods to share in a light fare potluck during the event.
What does Juneteenth reveal about the nature of the struggle for freedom? How did a bible that was used to justify slavery become an inspiration for liberation? In Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom, Our Daily Bread Ministries’ Rasool Berry takes viewers on a riveting journey that provides answers to these questions as he explores our nation’s newest federal holiday and hears first-hand accounts of descendants of those emancipated during this significant time in our nation’s history.
“As we began our research, we learned more about the depth of faith stories and biblical convictions included in the first celebration of the day and the many subsequent celebrations. We want to make sure that the Christian faith roots and worldview of the men and women who began celebrating this day are not lost in celebrations of the holiday. In our research, we also learned an interesting fact: Ms. Opal Lee, who urged Congress to recognize Juneteenth, is a faithful follower of Jesus and reader of Our Daily Bread,” says Dr. Matt Lucas, CEO and president of Our Daily Bread Ministries.
In a 2022 briefing from the White House, Juneteenth was hailed as “a chance to celebrate human freedom, reflect on the grievous and ongoing legacy of slavery, and rededicate ourselves to rooting out the systemic racism that continues to plague our society as we strive to deliver the full promise of America to every American.”
Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom has participated as an official film selection at Cleveland International Film Festival, Dallas International Film Festival, Heartland International Film Festival, Denton Black Film Festival, and Austin Revolution Film Festival.

Green Lake, Wis. (June 12, 2023) – Singer, songwriter, guitarist, storyteller, sailor, and road warrior are all words that aptly describe Scott Kirby. Kirby will play on Thursday, June 29, at the Havey’s Lakeside Lot (475 Lake Street, Green Lake) at 7:00 p.m., Writing songs for a new CD, performing 150 live shows a year throughout the US and Canada, and holding down the stage at his club—Key West’s Smokin’ Tuna Saloon—keep the barnacles off this modern-day troubadour.
A creative lyricist and accomplished finger-style acoustic guitarist with an expressive voice, Kirby describes himself as a direct descendent of the ’70s singer/songwriter movement. When it comes to songwriting, Kirby respects authenticity and counts on everyday life and his coastal roots for much of his inspiration. “I don’t wake up every day thinking about writing the next commercial hit,” says Kirby. “Songwriting for me is about telling stories, expressing emotions, and commentary on things I may find funny or absurd.” Over the years, Kirby has shared the stage with some of his favorite artists: Carole King, Jimmy Buffett, Livingston Taylor, Tom Rush, Mac McAnally, Peter Mayer, and others. When not on the road or performing in Key West, Kirby splits his time between Livingston, Montana, and the coast of New Hampshire, where he can often be found sailing, a lifelong passion of this descendent of Newfoundland fishers.

Audience members should bring their own lawn chairs; we ask for no beverage carry-ins, as a bar and cocktails will be available.
