Irish band Lúnasa is coming to Thrasher Opera House, 506 Mill Street, in Green Lake, on Friday, March 3, at 7:30 pm. For tickets or more information, please call (920) 294-4279, or visit: Home – Thrasher Opera House.
Home – Thrasher Opera House
Lúnasa, one of the most influential bands in the history of Irish traditional music, celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh, the group that Folk Roots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and over the years has proven its mettle time and again, having sold over a quarter of a million records, performed more than 2,000 shows in high-profile concert venues across 36 countries, and collaborated with many notable artists outside the tradition.
The group achieved a worldwide reputation as a different breed of Irish traditional band – one with the repertoire of life-long traditional musicians, the intricate harmonies of a jazz combo, and the energy of a rock band. The all-instrumental quintet is noted for double-bass and guitar-driven rhythms, original compositions mixed with material from Celtic regions such as Brittany, Galicia, and Asturias, and a surprising focus on slower melodies involving three-part harmonies played on the traditional pipes, fiddle, and flute.
More than two decades ago they ascended to the forefront of contemporary Irish music, and there they’ve remained, a leading voice in the genre and the standard against which others are compared. Piper Cillian Valley attributes the band’s longevity to the work they all do individually when they’re not touring together: “Each of us in the band have our own separate projects going on, and when we come back together, it brings a freshness and creativity to the group.”
Lúnasa’s current line-up features Trevor Hutchinson, who achieved fame as the bassist with The Waterboys and later Sharon Shannon; Cillian Vallely was a member of Riverdance and recorded with Bruce Springsteen; Kevin cRawford, considered one of Ireland’s greatest flute players, was a member of Moving Cloud; Sean Smyth, a practicing medical doctor, is a multiple all-Ireland champion on both fiddle and whistle, and has toured with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; and Ed Boyd made a name for himself in the UK folkscene with bands such as Flook, Kate Rusby, and Cara Dillon. The band is especially excited to be touring North America once again with founding member Sean Smyth, who has been rather busy in recent years with his medical practice in County Mayo.
Along with their broad repertoire of traditional and original music from the many Celtic regions of the world, on this seven-week tour of the United States and Canada, the band will be “road-testing” new material for a release to be recorded in Japan later in the year. As flautist Crawford describes it: “Because this is such a long tour, it’s a perfect opportunity to try out new material. We can share files with each other and learn tunes, share ideas, but also have the road to test them, to play in front of an audience, and get the energy behind them, and see if they work in real life.”

Irish Band Lúnasa Returns to Thrasher Opera House on March 03
Green Lake, Wis. (February 13, 2023) – Lúnasa performs at Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake, Wisconsin, on Friday, March 03, at 7:30 p.m. Lúnasa has long been one of contemporary Irish music’s leading voices. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh, the group that Folk Roots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and, over the years, has proven its mettle time and again, having sold over a quarter of a million records, and collaborated with notable artists outside the tradition such as Natalie Merchant and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. They have performed more than 2,000 shows across 36 countries, including high-profile concert venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, National Concert Hall (Dublin), and Paris Bercy, and many leading festivals such as Glastonbury, Womadelaide & Edmonton.
From the start, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped traditional music’s boundaries and energized audiences worldwide. Critical acclaim followed, with The Irish Echo describing the band as “the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet”; MOJO magazine named the band “the new gods of Irish music,” adding that “nobody since the Bothies has wielded such a thrilling rhythmic underlay.” Billboard raved that “anybody who listens can’t help but find them contagious.”
Lúnasa’s performance is sponsored by the Diedrich Agency, a Vizance Co., and Adam’s Rib. Artist dining is provided by Murphy’s on Green, sponsored by Sean Engebretson of Creative Contractors. Artist lodging is provided by the Heidel House Hotel and Conference Center. This event is supported in part by a grant from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Tickets for Lúnasa on Friday, March 03, at 7:30 p.m. are $30 and are available www.thrasheroperahouse.com or by calling 920.294.4279

Short synopsis: This is a deeply personal film that surveys 30 years of filming children all over the world and measures the changes that have occurred for better or worse in children’s human rights.
Butterfly, Butterfly moves around the globe examining child labor in American agriculture, tobacco, coffee, cocoa. It examines the plight of street children, incarcerating children, how we address the massive inequality that consigns children to forced labor or contributes to 13.7 million children who are fleeing for their lives. Butterfly, Butterfly looks at how we are cultivating a new generation of youth activists and leaders and it ultimately I hope is a film with an optimistic message.
Did you know that one of the largest and most important ancient Native American village and burial mound complexes in eastern Wisconsin is located just 10-15 miles west of Fairwater? Mark your calendars for our Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m. to hear about it!
Archaeologist Ryan J. Howell will speak on “The Ancient History of Metomen Township: The Grand River Mound and Walker-Hooper Village Native American Archaeological Sites near Kingston, WI.”
He will speak about these sites, and the history of their excavation by and with the Walker family from the 1920s to the 1970s.
Also discussed will be what these digs have taught us about the lives and lifestyles of the ancient Native Americans who called what would become Fond du Lac and Winnebago counties home more than 1,000 years ago. The Native American pottery and arrowhead artifact types associated with ancient sites common to the Fairwater area will be discussed.
Audience members are welcome to bring any artifacts from their own family collections from the area, to have Howell identify and date them for you. Native American artifacts in the Fairwater area go back more than 12,000 years into the past, so you might be surprised what your family might have found in your own farm fields!
Presenter Ryan J. Howell has conducted archaeological research in Wisconsin and along the Fox River waterway for more than 25 years. He is currently the Garrison Archaeologist at Fort McCoy for the U.S. Army. He received his BA in Archaeology/Anthropology from the University of Wyoming, and his Masters degree from UW–Madison in 1998.
He has worked doing archaeology for many engineering firms, Native American tribes, and government agencies throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. His research interests include both the pre-contact and historic contact eras of Wisconsin history. His published articles focus on the ancient Native American sites, and both Native American, French and British sites of the Fur Trade/Colonial era sites in Wisconsin.
Light refreshments will be provided by the FHS.
New members are always welcome. Dues are $25 per year, and may be mailed to Fairwater Historical Society, P.O. Box 151, Fairwater, WI 53931.
The Fairwater Historical Society is located at 106 Main Street in Fairwater.

New Orleans Based The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Performs in Green Lake
Green Lake, Wis. (February 20, 2023) – The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will debut on the Thrasher Opera House stage in Green Lake, Wisconsin, on Saturday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band has incorporated the traditional foundation of brass band music into a blend of genres, including Bebop Jazz, Funk, and R&B/Soul. This unique sound, described by the band as a ‘musical gumbo,’ has allowed the Dirty Dozen to tour across five continents and more than 30 countries, record 12 studio albums and collaborate with a range of artists from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic to Norah Jones. Forty-plus years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world-famous music machine whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances.
In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud but antiquated traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early predecessors of jazz as we know it, often followed the funeral procession playing somber dirges. Then, once the deceased’s family was out of earshot, they burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late ’70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen, Social and Pleasure Club, decided to assemble this group as a house band. Over these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue’s name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The group recently won a Best American Roots Performance Grammy for their collaboration with Aaron Neville on the song “Stompin’ Ground”
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s performance is sponsored by the Diedrich Agency, a Vizance Co. This event is supported in part by a grant from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Tickets for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band show are $45 and are available at www.thrasheroperahouse.com or by calling 920.294.4279

Popular Program ‘Aging Mastery®’ Returns for Spring Session
Seniors looking to make small but impactful daily changes that lead to healthier living outcomes are invited to take part in the Aging Mastery Program®, a free, 6-week workshop sponsored by the Waushara County Department of Aging in conjunction with UW-Extension. This well-attended, on-going program was developed by the National Council on Aging and is held nationwide both in-person and virtually for people 55 and over.
The fundamentals of Aging Mastery® support modest lifestyle changes to empower and support health and longevity. Attendees walk away with skills and tools to achieve personal wellness goals. “Aging Mastery combines health and wellness curriculum with expert local presenters on a variety of topics that have direct links with aging,” says Carolyn Schmidt, Programs Specialist with Waushara County. Topics covered include Financial Fitness, Advance Planning, Falls Prevention, Healthy Eating and Hydration, and Exercise and You.
“One of the benefits of the program is getting to know others who are going through similar experiences as you are. I’ve watched participants walk away having learned tips not only from the materials and speakers, but also from each other. It’s an opportunity to learn and socialize by meeting new people too,” says Schmidt.
This in-person session of Aging Mastery® runs from April 6 – May 11, 2023, Thursdays, from 1:00pm 3:00pm at the Wautoma Library. You do not need to be a Waushara County resident to take part. The Caramel Crisp Bookstore staff is excited to be partnering with the Winnebago Area Literacy Council in a project to help reading learners.
Beginning March 20th and through the end of March, the Bookstore in Caramel Crisp will be a collection point for new and gently used books, which will then be donated to the Literacy Council for use with their reading learners.
Adult Fiction, Adult Non-fiction and Children’s Books may all be donated. If your book shelves are feeling a bit crowded these days, this is a chance to do a little spring cleaning and help out your neighbors in the process!
Out of respect for the families we will be helping, please make sure that the donated books are clean and in good condition. Please, no encyclopedias, outdated reference books, Reader’s Digest Condensed Books or magazines.
Please bring donated materials during Bookstore hours only – Monday through Friday 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday & Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. Bring items directly to the Bookstore counter – our lovely cafe workers will be very busy serving cafe customers, so we would like to make sure this project is not a burden for them!
