Hometown Calendar
The Ripon Area Community Theatre (RACT) presents the world premiere of the original stage comedy, “Blue Ribbons;” a play about love, hate, and pie, written by Thomas Bakken, May 31st through June 2nd. Pies, family, and more pies. What could be better than that? Why, winning the coveted blue ribbon at the annual town fair, obviously. For the last 20 years, Anne Cross and Deloris Doyle have done exactly that. It is now the twenty-first year of their not-so-friendly competition, and the two women stand tied with ten wins apiece. Their feud has become the stuff of town legend. Yet, their antics continue to take a toll on their families and community at large. Now, as Anne and Deloris square off for this year’s contest, the eccentric pie judges, scheming town board members and hapless families all become entangled in one last battle for the blue ribbon. Performances are Friday, May 31st and Saturday, June 1st at 7 pm, and Sunday, June 2nd at 2 pm, in the Ripon High School auditorium, 850 Tiger Drive. Doors open 30 minutes before the performance. There will be a bake sale and 50/50 raffle during intermission to support the Ripon Area Community Theatre. General Admission is $10, ages 6-12 is $5 and ages 5 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased online and at the door. Box 4 • 506 Mill St. Green Lake, WI • 54941-0004 P: 920.294.4279 PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jason Mansmith Art Exhibit by Andi Rogers on Display through June at Thrasher Opera House Green Lake, Wis. (May 01, 2024)—Green Lake’s historic Thrasher Opera House will host an exhibit by artist Andi Rogers from May 1 through June 30, 2024. The exhibit can be viewed M-F 10-4; for after-hours visits, call 920.294.4279 to schedule a time. Andi Rogers started painting with watercolors in the early months of 2022. All it took was one introduction to this unpredictable medium that uses water-soluble pigments to create a wide range of effects on cotton paper. This one encounter ignited her love for watercolor, which she never knew existed. Andi loves to explore various watercolor techniques as she develops her artistic style and identity with a brush. ‘I’ve never considered myself any sort of artist. Throughout my life, crafts and fiber arts have been the focus. Watercolor has provided for me a challenge and Zen that I find so satisfying. It’s such a delight to watch a painting develop… layer after layer.’ Born in Racine, WI, Andi is 48 years old and a 25-year resident of nearby Berlin. She invites you to view her pieces and follow the story that will lead you through her short but fulfilling journey in watercolor. She also encourages everyone to explore new things. ‘If I can learn new things, so can you!’ This exhibit can be viewed M-F 10-4; for after-hour visits, call 920.294.4279 to schedule a time. (May 13, 2024) – Singer, songwriter, guitarist, storyteller, sailor, and road warrior are all words that aptly describe Scott Kirby. Kirby will play on Thursday, June 27, at the Havey’s Lakeside Lot (475 Lake Street, Green Lake) at 7:00 p.m., Writing songs for a new CD, performing 150 live shows a year throughout the US and Canada, and holding down the stage at his club—Key West’s Smokin’ Tuna Saloon—keep the barnacles off this modern-day troubadour. A creative lyricist and accomplished finger-style acoustic guitarist with an expressive voice, Kirby describes himself as a direct descendent of the ’70s singer/songwriter movement. When it comes to songwriting, Kirby respects authenticity and counts on everyday life and his coastal roots for much of his inspiration. “I don’t wake up every day thinking about writing the next commercial hit,” says Kirby. “Songwriting for me is about telling stories, expressing emotions, and commentary on things I may find funny or absurd.” Over the years, Kirby has shared the stage with some of his favorite artists: Carole King, Jimmy Buffett, Livingston Taylor, Tom Rush, Mac McAnally, Peter Mayer, and others. When not on the road or performing in Key West, Kirby splits his time between Livingston, Montana, and the coast of New Hampshire, where he can often be found sailing, a lifelong passion of this descendent of Newfoundland fishers. Audience members should bring their own lawn chairs; we ask for no beverage carry-ins, as a bar and cocktails will be available. This event is generously underwritten by Mike and Jill Havey and Havey Communications. True West is a play by celebrated American dramatist Sam Shepard, who played a pivotal role in off-Broadway theatre development. “You sound just like the old man.” “Yeah, well, we all sound alike when we’re sloshed. We just echo each other.” An estranged brother rolls into town, and with him the echoes of a time long past. But who’s the real stranger in this family? Austin, the Ivy league screenwriter, ten years junior to Lee—a housebreaking vagabond just back from the Californian desert. But in this play uncomfortable dualities abound, between and within each character: nature and nurture, art and business, fiction and reality, civilization and the frontier, beginnings and endings, brother and brother.
Rebel Alliance Theatre’s first performance following their rousing LGTBQ program aims to continue developing our staff and craft to continue bringing genuine theatre at an affordable price. All performances take place at First Congregational Church in Oshkosh, 137 Algoma Blvd.
