Brandon Public Library was recently awarded $473,000 toward their expansion project, which currently houses the Brandon Historical Society and museum, and will make the building handicapped accessible. U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that more than $255.7 million in congressionally directed spending for Wisconsin projects she supported has been included in the bipartisan Omnibus Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2023. Ripon Public Library is making strides toward renovations to the inside and outside of their location. Their “Thinking Outside the Books” capital campaign will create refreshed youth spaces, a teen area, and an interactive outdoor space to include a play space, performance stage, and stone steps to Silver Creek. Ethel Everhard Memorial Library completed interior renovations to their space in 2022, thanks to Village and Library trust funds. Stop in to visit their new space! Thanks to additional funding from Winnefox Library System and member libraries, patrons using cards from Winnefox can take advantage of additional copies of popular titles. “Advantage” collections help you get your next book faster. Library staff from across Wisconsin gathered at the Wisconsin State Capitol on February 7 for Library Legislative Day. Staff met with State Senators and Representatives serving our communities to share the successes and impact our libraries have on citizen. They advocated for continued support from the state to allow us to grow in all that we do to meet the needs of every one of our residents. The Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the Alfred T. Peck Grant. The Alfred T. Peck Grant may be awarded to one or multiple applicants totaling $1,000. A longtime supporter of the Green Lake Chamber, Alfred T. Peck was a resident of Green Lake for many years and owned Alfred’s. Peck understood the need to have a fund that will support increased tourism development in Green Lake. Through his planned giving, he made the founding endowment to what is now the Alfred T. Peck Foundation. The grant aims to assist non-profit, tax-exempt, Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce member organizations with charitable projects and programs that generate tourism to the Green Lake area. To be funded, project applications must be submitted by March 31, 2023. The application must describe the project in detail, as well as show how the project will benefit the community, who will be served, and an estimated budget. Applicable projects will occur between April 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. An ad-hoc committee of the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will review applications. Irish band Lúnasa is coming to Thrasher Opera House, 506 Mill Street, in Green Lake, on Friday, March 3, at 7:30 pm. Lúnasa, one of the most influential bands in the history of Irish traditional music, celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh, the group that Folk Roots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and over the years has proven its mettle time and again, having sold over a quarter of a million records, performed more than 2,000 shows in high-profile concert venues across 36 countries, and collaborated with many notable artists outside the tradition. The group achieved a worldwide reputation as a different breed of Irish traditional band – one with the repertoire of life-long traditional musicians, the intricate harmonies of a jazz combo, and the energy of a rock band. The all-instrumental quintet is noted for double-bass and guitar-driven rhythms, original compositions mixed with material from Celtic regions such as Brittany, Galicia, and Asturias, and a surprising focus on slower melodies involving three-part harmonies played on the traditional pipes, fiddle, and flute. More than two decades ago they ascended to the forefront of contemporary Irish music, and there they’ve remained, a leading voice in the genre and the standard against which others are compared. Piper Cillian Valley attributes the band’s longevity to the work they all do individually when they’re not touring together: “Each of us in the band have our own separate projects going on, and when we come back together, it brings a freshness and creativity to the group.” Lúnasa’s current line-up features Trevor Hutchinson, who achieved fame as the bassist with The Waterboys and later Sharon Shannon; Cillian Vallely was a member of Riverdance and recorded with Bruce Springsteen; Kevin cRawford, considered one of Ireland’s greatest flute players, was a member of Moving Cloud; Sean Smyth, a practicing medical doctor, is a multiple all-Ireland champion on both fiddle and whistle, and has toured with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; and Ed Boyd made a name for himself in the UK folkscene with bands such as Flook, Kate Rusby, and Cara Dillon. The band is especially excited to be touring North America once again with founding member Sean Smyth, who has been rather busy in recent years with his medical practice in County Mayo. Along with their broad repertoire of traditional and original music from the many Celtic regions of the world, on this seven-week tour of the United States and Canada, the band will be “road-testing” new material for a release to be recorded in Japan later in the year. As flautist Crawford describes it: “Because this is such a long tour, it’s a perfect opportunity to try out new material. Irish band Lúnasa is coming to Thrasher Opera House, 506 Mill Street, in Green Lake, on Friday, March 3, at 7:30 pm. Lúnasa, one of the most influential bands in the history of Irish traditional music, celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh, the group that Folk Roots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and over the years has proven its mettle time and again, having sold over a quarter of a million records, performed more than 2,000 shows in high-profile concert venues across 36 countries, and collaborated with many notable artists outside the tradition. The group achieved a worldwide reputation as a different breed of Irish traditional band – one with the repertoire of life-long traditional musicians, the intricate harmonies of a jazz combo, and the energy of a rock band. The all-instrumental quintet is noted for double-bass and guitar-driven rhythms, original compositions mixed with material from Celtic regions such as Brittany, Galicia, and Asturias, and a surprising focus on slower melodies involving three-part harmonies played on the traditional pipes, fiddle, and flute. More than two decades ago they ascended to the forefront of contemporary Irish music, and there they’ve remained, a leading voice in the genre and the standard against which others are compared. Piper Cillian Valley attributes the band’s longevity to the work they all do individually when they’re not touring together: “Each of us in the band have our own separate projects going on, and when we come back together, it brings a freshness and creativity to the group.” Lúnasa’s current line-up features Trevor Hutchinson, who achieved fame as the bassist with The Waterboys and later Sharon Shannon; Cillian Vallely was a member of Riverdance and recorded with Bruce Springsteen; Kevin cRawford, considered one of Ireland’s greatest flute players, was a member of Moving Cloud; Sean Smyth, a practicing medical doctor, is a multiple all-Ireland champion on both fiddle and whistle, and has toured with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; and Ed Boyd made a name for himself in the UK folkscene with bands such as Flook, Kate Rusby, and Cara Dillon. The band is especially excited to be touring North America once again with founding member Sean Smyth, who has been rather busy in recent years with his medical practice in County Mayo. Along with their broad repertoire of traditional and original music from the many Celtic regions of the world, on this seven-week tour of the United States and Canada, the band will be “road-testing” new material for a release to be recorded in Japan later in the year. The Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the Alfred T. Peck Grant. The Alfred T. Peck Grant may be awarded to one or multiple applicants totaling $1,000. A longtime supporter of the Green Lake Chamber, Alfred T. Peck was a resident of Green Lake for many years and owned Alfred’s. Peck understood the need to have a fund that will support increased tourism development in Green Lake. Through his planned giving, he made the founding endowment to what is now the Alfred T. Peck Foundation. The grant aims to assist non-profit, tax-exempt, Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce member organizations with charitable projects and programs that generate tourism to the Green Lake area. To be funded, project applications must be submitted by March 31, 2023. The application must describe the project in detail, as well as show how the project will benefit the community, who will be served, and an estimated budget. Applicable projects will occur between April 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. An ad-hoc committee of the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will review applications. (February 20, 2023) – The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will debut on the Thrasher Opera House stage in Green Lake, Wisconsin, on Saturday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band has incorporated the traditional foundation of brass band music into a blend of genres, including Bebop Jazz, Funk, and R&B/Soul. This unique sound, described by the band as a ‘musical gumbo,’ has allowed the Dirty Dozen to tour across five continents and more than 30 countries, record 12 studio albums and collaborate with a range of artists from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic to Norah Jones. Forty-plus years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world-famous music machine whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud but antiquated traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early predecessors of jazz as we know it, often followed the funeral procession playing somber dirges. Then, once the deceased’s family was out of earshot, they burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late ’70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen, Social and Pleasure Club, decided to assemble this group as a house band. Over these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue’s name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The group recently won a Best American Roots Performance Grammy for their collaboration with Aaron Neville on the song “Stompin’ Ground” The Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s performance is sponsored by the Diedrich Agency, a Vizance Co. This well-attended, on-going program was developed by the National Council on Aging and is held nationwide both in-person and virtually for people 55 and over. The fundamentals of Aging Mastery® support modest lifestyle changes to empower and support health and longevity. Attendees walk away with skills and tools to achieve personal wellness goals. “Aging Mastery combines health and wellness curriculum with expert local presenters on a variety of topics that have direct links with aging,” says Carolyn Schmidt, Programs Specialist with Waushara County. Topics covered include Financial Fitness, Advance Planning, Falls Prevention, Healthy Eating and Hydration, and Exercise and You. “One of the benefits of the program is getting to know others who are going through similar experiences as you are. The Caramel Crisp Bookstore staff is excited to be partnering with the Winnebago Area Literacy Council in a project to help reading learners. Beginning March 20th and through the end of March, the Bookstore in Caramel Crisp will be a collection point for new and gently used books, which will then be donated to the Literacy Council for use with their reading learners.
