Memorial Day Weekend Safety Reminders
As people get together for Memorial Day weekend gatherings Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller urges residents to keep safety recommendations for the COVID-19 pandemic in mind to prevent its spread. She says many of them people know by heart now; practice social distancing of 6 feet or more away from others, wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds, if you’re sick stay at home except to get medical care, wear a cloth face covering, avoid touching your face, eyes, and mouth when out in public, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. The state’s Department of Health also recommends staying a home as much as possible and avoid gatherings of 10 or more people.
Vitamin D May Help Fight COVID 19
Congressman Glenn Grothman would like to see more research done on the link between Vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19. Research studies by Northwestern University and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland assert vitamin D deficiency may play a role in increasing the severity of symptoms and overall mortality rate in COVID-19 patients. Grothman says good old exposure to the sun or even pill forms of vitamin D could probably help lessen the severity of the disease if you get it. “They talk about vaccines all the time. Maybe they will come up with a vaccine some day and maybe they won’t, you got to remember it’s been 100 years and we still don’t have a vaccine for the Spanish Flu, and sometimes vaccines aren’t that effective. But it does appear that getting vitamin D is a very important thing.” A Northwestern article on their study concluded that vitamin D will not prevent an individual from contracting the virus, having healthy levels of vitamin D may prevent or reduce severe illness, complications or death in those who are affected.
Chromebook Donation Appreciated
Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says one of the issues that resulted from Safer at Home type restrictions is the loneliness and isolation of older residents in nursing homes and assisted living centers unable to connect with their families and in particular grandkids. “The Ripon School District kudos to them has donated seven Chromebooks that can go to nursing homes so that you can log in and see your grandchildren.” He says as we transition back to work there will also be continuing needs for mental health care, food, and employment.

Hand Sanitizer Safety Tips
Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue officials offer a few safety tips about storing hand sanitizer. They remind residents that Ethyl Alcohol is the active ingredient in most hand sanitizers and it is flammable. It should be kept away from heat sources, sparks and open flames. The container lid should be tightly closed and it should be stored in a well ventilated space. It should not be left in a vehicle for an extended period of time. Excessive heat can break down its active ingredients making it less effective. You should also refrain from smoking or lighting any smoking material while applying hand sanitizer.
