Shawano Woman Arrested For Fifth OWI

The State Patrol arrested a 64-year-old Shawano woman in Waupaca County for her fifth operating while intoxicated offense. A state trooper stopped on County Highway X at Larry Road to check on a disabled minivan. The trooper could smell the odor of intoxicants coming from Donna Welch’s breath and noticed other signs of impairment. She failed field sobriety testing and was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and driving with a revoked license.

Walk Away From Dodge County Jail Waives Preliminary Hearing 

A 19-year-old Milwaukee woman who walked away from the Dodge County Jail was recently bound over for trial. Tasheana Williams-Sonny waived her preliminary hearing last Thursday. She was on a work release program when she failed to return to the jail from a preapproved appointment in June. She was serving a one-year sentence for resisting an officer causing injury. Williams-Sonny will be arraigned on February 5th.  

Deadly Snowmobile Accident In Northern Wisconsin

Officials in northern Wisconsin say two snowmobilers died after their machines plunged into a lake early Sunday morning. A third rider survived the incident on Lake Nokomis and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call from that person about 3 am. When deputies arrived at the lake they found three snowmobiles and their three riders had gone into the water. Two of the riders died in the mishap. Names have not been released pending notification of family members.

Deadly Flu Season

The state’s Department of Health Services is urging residents to get flu shots. Officials say 459 people have been hospitalized with the flu this season, more than three times as many people as were hospitalized at this time last year. In addition 11 people have died due to complications from influenza. State Health Officer Jeanne Ayers says it is a sober reminder that flu is not only dangerous, but can be deadly.

Energy Drink Littering In Waupaca County

Waupaca County Sheriff’s officials are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or people responsible for dumping a “large quantity” of 5-hour Energy drink bottles on Constance Road in the Town of Waupaca. It was done over an extensive amount of time. The 1.93 ounce bottles contain a berry-flavored drink. Anyone with information can call the Waupaca County Crime Stoppers program at (888) 258-9955 and can remain anonymous if they wish. Tips could lead to a cash reward.

Training Available In Suicide Prevention

A program offered through Comprehensive Service Integration of Fond du Lac County’s Destination Zero trains people on how to recognize warning signs and take steps to prevent suicide. Tammi Kohlman is Destination Zero Coordinator. She says it’s known as Question, Persuade and Refer or QPR. Almost 1,000 people got the training last year through their workplace or group. “We started the effort at the beginning of 2019 and actually throughout 2019 we trained 966 people throughout the county in the traini8ng and our goal for 2020 is to get over 1,000 people trained.” She says they can provide training anywhere in the county to groups of any size and can provide training outside of regular working hours if needed. Destination Zero is a program that tries to provide early help to those who might be considering suicide. Kohlman says those who would like to know more about the QPR training can call her at (920) 906-6527 or visit the CSI website. Regular QPR training is also available at the YMCA in Fond du Lac.  

Good Year For The Ripon Area Chamber Of Commerce

Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith says the Chamber had a great year in 2019 and they are looking forward to more progress in 2020. The area got some publicity courtesy or Around the Corner with John McGivern and Discover Wisconsin programs. Plus events like Cookie Daze, Wine Walks, Dickens of a Christmas, and others generated good attendance. “It was a great year for us we are looking forward to 2020. Significant anniversaries for some of our community events this year, 25 years for Cookie Daze, 30 years for Dickens of a Christmas in 2020 as well.” The Annual Dinner is coming up next month and the first Wine Walk of the year is April 17th with tickets going on sale in mid-February.

Alice In Dairyland Applications Being Taken

Applications are being taken for the 73rd Alice in Dairyland. But time is limited to submit applications for those who are eligible and interested. Application materials are available on the state Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection website. Applications have to be returned by February 3rd. Alice in Dairyland is the ambassador for the state’s $104.8 billion agricultural industry. The 73rd Alice in Dairyland will be crowned during final interviews in mid-May in Walworth County.
