Mason Crosby kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Green Bay Packers to a 23-20 win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field to earn a first-round bye and a second seed in the NFC. The Packers (13-3) fell behind by two touchdowns in the second quarter. They didn’t lead until Crosby made his second game-winning kick against Detroit this season. It was redemption for Crosby who missed four field goals at Detroit in a Packers loss to the Lions in 2018. The Lions (3-12-1) closed with nine straight losses for their longest losing streak in a season since going 0-16 in 2008.
Green Bay won despite Aaron Rodgers struggling to make accurate throws for much of the afternoon. Rodgers was 27 of 55 for 323 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He made a short pass under pressure to Aaron Jones, who turned the clutch throw into a 31-yard reception to set up Crosby’s kick. Jones ran for 100 yards on 25 carries and had 43 yards receiving. Davante Adams had seven receptions for 93 yards and a score.
David Blough was 12 of 29 for 122 yards — and a 19-yard touchdown reception — filling in again for Matthew Stafford, who had a season-ending back injury. Despite playing only for pride, the Lions looked as if they were more motivated to win early in the game. And with nothing to lose, they scored on a trick play midway through the first quarter. Blough handed off to receiver Danny Amendola, who threw back across the field to the rookie quarterback for a TD. Kerryon Johnson converted a fourth down with a 1-yard TD run late in the first half, giving Detroit a 14-0 that stunned everyone not on their sideline. Crosby and Matt Prater made field goals over the last 20 seconds of the first half, leaving the Lions with a 17-3 lead.
Rodgers started to make more accurate passes in the second, completing a 20-yard TD pass to Adams and a 28-yard pass to Allen Lazard with 5:19 left for another score that helped the Packers pull into a 20-all tie. On the injury front, right tackle Bryan Bulaga is being evaluated for a concussion. He was replaced by Jared Veldheer. Center Corey Linsley was ruled out of the game with a back injury.
The Packers committed nine penalties for 97 yards while the Lions were penalized four times for 50 yards.
There was a long moment of silence before the game for receiver Marvin Jones’ 6-month old son, who recently died. Jones, who was on the sideline with his family during the national anthem, went on injured reserve earlier this month.
Elsewhere in the NFC North, Minnesota lost at home to the Bears, 21-19. Last night the 49ers held on to win at Seattle, 26-21.

The 2020 Pro Bowl (ESPN, with simulcast on ABC, 3:00 PM ET) will be played on Sunday, January 26, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, and Super Bowl LIV will take place on Sunday, February 2 (FOX, 6:30 PM ET), at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The NFL announced the Green Bay Packers former gunslinger quarterback Brett Favre has made the NFL All-Time 100 Team. He’s one of 10 quarterbacks selected. Bart Starr and Aaron Rodgers are among the 22 finalists nominated, but they did not make the team.
The Green Bay Packers have signed guard Lucas Patrick to a contract extension on Saturday. The Packers did not announce the terms of the deal. The Athletic Packers beat writer Matt Schneidman reports the deal is for two years and $3.6 million. Patrick signed with the Packers in 2016 as a undrafted free agent. He spent his rookie season on the practice squad. From 2017-2019, Lucas has played in 39 games with six starts. He filled in for Corey Linsley at center during the Dallas Cowboys game.
The Packers also announced they released cornerback Tony Brown. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Saturday. Brown played in nine games for the Packers this season, registering nine tackles (five solo), two special teams tackles and a blocked extra point.
In the NBA tonight, the Bucks (29-5) play the Bulls in Chicago (13-20).
In the G-League, LAKELAND defeated the Wisconsin Herd Saturday night,118-11. B.J. Johnson and Vic Law combine for 69 points in the Magic victory.
Four Herd players scored in double figures led by Jemerrio Jones and Frank Mason.
Jones poured in a career-high 24 points and added 16 rebounds, three assists and
season-high-tying three steals, and Mason posted 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting. For
the third consecutive game, Shannon Bogues scored in double figures and had 15
points, while Jaylen Adams returned from an illness and record 14 points and three
steals. A.J. Hess pitched in with 12 points and four three-pointers in a reserve
role.
Wisconsin will enjoy a couple days off before embarking on a three-game road trip
with stops in Chicago, Long Island and Fort Wayne. Tip-off against the Windy City
Bulls is set for Friday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. CT.
In women’s college basketball from Sunday, U-W Oshkosh defeated Ripon College, 62-55.
Senior guard Markus Howard hit 5 of 7 3-pointers and set Marquette’s all-time record for career treys as the Golden Eagles routed Central Arkansas 106-54 on Saturday in their final nonconference game of the season. Howard’s career 358 3-pointers surpasses the 354 made by Steve Novak (2002-06). Howard opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and scored 25 of his 30 points in 13 minutes of first-half play as the Golden Eagles took a 57-24 halftime lead. Marquette’s 106 points is a season high and it’s the second time this season the Golden Eagles have reached the century mark.
