Shooting At Oshkosh West High School
4 December 2019 News
Oshkosh Police Chief Dean Smith says a 16-year-old Oshkosh West student stabbed a school resource officer Tuesday morning and the officer then fired on the student. Smith said during a news conference the incident happened in the officer’s office shortly after 9 am. The officer fired once. Both the officer and the student were taken to a local hospital for treatment of what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries. Oshkosh West was placed on lockdown and students were moved to the Perry Tippler Middle School where they were reunited with their parents. The state’s Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation. The Police Department also investigated a comment on social media implying a possible threat against Oshkosh North High School. Based on that threat police do not believe students are in danger. No classes will be held in the Oshkosh Area School District today. Mental health support is being made available today to students, families and staff at the District’s middle schools and Roosevelt Elementary School. The shooting at Oshkosh West happened a day after a student was shot by an officer at Waukesha South High School. That 17-year-old student had allegedly brought a pellet gun to school.
Oshkosh West School Shooting Reaction
There was plenty of reaction from area politicians to yesterday’s shooting incident at Oshkosh West High School. State Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac praised the quick response of law enforcement. Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh says he was profoundly saddened by the incident. Governor Tony Evers says it hit close to home for him and his wife Kathy because two of their kids graduated from Oshkosh West High School. Senator Ron Johnson of Oshkosh says larger tragedies may have been averted because of the training of school and law enforcement officials at both Oshkosh West and a day earlier at Waukesha South High School.
