Less than a week after his mother’s passing, Mike Shildt was honored for piloting the St. Louis Cardinals back into the playoffs, narrowly beating Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers to win the N.L. Manager of the Year. Schildt earned the award in his first full season on the job, even though Counsell received more first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers of Amercia.   Counsell received 13 first place votes to Schildt’s 8, but the Cardinals skipper received 27 total votes to Counsell’s 24.   Counsell finished second in the 2018 voting to the Braves Brian Snitker, who was also a finalist this season.

Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli won the A.L. prize in a tight ballot over Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees. Both received 13 first-place votes, but Baldelli got more second-place nods. The 38-year old is the youngest to win the award.

In college basketball tonight, Wisconsin hosts McNeese State. The Badgers are 1-1 while McNeese State is 1-2. On Sunday, the Badgers host Marquette.

On Tuesday night, U-W Oshkosh defeated North Central College 76-66, to improve to 2-0. Eric Peterson led the Titans with 18 points and Adam Fravert added 15.

The Packers are in their bye week after an 8-2 start in which they won 5-out-of 6 games at home. Before the players left for some time off, coach Matt LaFleur said there’s room for improvement.

Running back Aaron Jones has started to receive consideration as the league’s MVP. Teammate Jamaal Williams said Jones is a legitimate candidate to win the award.

Meanwhile, the Packers play at San Francisco in their first game back from the bye. That game was scheduled for 3:25 CDT but has now been flexed to a 7:25 start.
