Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll was among those who took part in a bill signing ceremony last Wednesday that will provide health insurance for the spouses and children of law enforcement officers and emergency medical workers killed in the line of duty. He says the timing couldn’t have been more appropriate with the 16th anniversary of the shooting death of Deputy Bruce Williams falling this past Saturday. Williams was killed responding to a domestic violence incident in Green Lake. The new law is retroactive to 2011, but will not cover William’s family. Podoll says this is a benefit all 72 county sheriffs supported and he testified on behalf of. He says when his law enforcement career is over it is one of things he will consider a great accomplishment. “This is something big, anything can go through, but this is a big step that we took.” The health insurance benefit will cover spouses until they are 65-years-old and children until they turn 26.
