Oshkosh Area Community Band Performing November 2

20 October 2019 News

OSHKOSH — The Oshkosh Area Community Band will present Fall Classics Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Albert Kimball Auditorium, Oshkosh West High School on Eagle Street. The Dixieland Band will perform before the concert at 6:45 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m.

Admission to the 90-minute concert is free.

With light classics, marches, popular tunes from the past decades, and music to get your body moving, there is something for everyone in a stylistically wide-ranging concert. Gustav Holst wrote “First Suite in Eb” in 1921. In the 98 years since, it has become a standard in the wind band literature from its opening bass line statement through to its British march ending.

Roger Lalk will be the guest conductor in his own arrangement of “How to Build a Band.” This is a light-hearted look at what makes up a band with a rap-style narration.

Jon Basten will lead the group in a Warren Barker arrangement of “Symphonic Gershwin,” a medley of some of George Gershwin’s light classical music, including An American in Paris, A Cuban Overture and Rhapsody in Blue.

Xylophonist Mary Rank and the saxophone section will perform Billy Joel’s lively Root Beer Rag, and James Handlon’s Jungle Jump will take you back to the ’40s.

The memory of Oshkosh native John Lorge, who passed away peacefully May 13 in California, will be honored as the composer of “Wisconsin Watermusic,” commissioned by the band and premiered in 2017 with Lorge as the guest conductor. The band will perform The Ship That Never Returned from “Wisconsin Watermusic.”

Jazz Ensemble will perform the classic Count Basie hit “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” Dave Barduhn’s arrangement of Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns” and Carlos Santana’s “Smooth.”

Jazz Ensemble and Dixieland Band is led by Jon Basten. Concert band is directed by R. David Berndt.
