FDL County Board Denies Claim For Accident Involving Sheriff’s Detective

The Fond du Lac County Board Tuesday night unanimously denied a claim put in for a traffic accident involving Sheriff’s Detective Pete Vergos. County Corporation Counsel Meggin’ McNamara told supervisors Jeffrey Kirsch is seeking $150,000 for himself and $50,000 for his wife for the injuries they suffered. She says Kirsch also claimed his vehicle was totaled. McNamara said by denying the claim that limits Kirsch to six months in which he is allowed to file a lawsuit. The nature of the accident was not discussed.

Two Facing Charges For Allegedly Passing Counterfeit Bills In Beaver Dam

Two Madison residents are facing charges for allegedly passing counterfeit $100 bills in Beaver Dam. Among the stores 21-year-old Hazel Freiberg and 19-year-old Kierre Washington passed the phony bills last March are Rechek’s Food Pride, Wal-Mart, Game Stop and Animart. They also allegedly tried to use them at Menard’s and Shopko. The two will make their initial appearances in Dodge County court on November 4th. According to state court records Freiberg was convicted of forgery in St. Croix County in May and placed on probation for a year. She has an open case in Walworth County. Washington is charged with similar crimes in Rock, St. Croix and Walworth counties.  

Horicon Bank Completes Merger With Markesan State Bank 

Horicon Bank has completed its merger with Markesan State Bank. It has been in the works for months and is now complete. Tuesday Markesan State Bank opened its four locations under the Horicon Bank brand. Those locations are in Markesan, Randolph, and Waupun. Horicon Bank now operates 19 locations in seven counties. Its total assets are $880 million.  

Deputy Medical Examiner Position Created 

Dodge County supervisors this week approved the creation of a deputy medical examiner position. The count’s Judicial and Public Protection committee identified the need while reviewing staff levels. Medical Examiner P.J. Schoebel says they already have three promising candidates for the position. A job description has already been created for the position.  

Suicide Prevention Training

The chairman of the State Assembly’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention says they would like mental health and primary health care providers trained in suicide prevention. State Representative Joan Ballweg says the training would be part of the continuing education process those professionals are required to take. The state lawmaker from Markesan says they may not be aware they are dealing with someone that is contemplating suicide. “Research shows that 45 percent of all folks that took their lives by suicide saw their primary care physician in about the 30 days before they took their lives.” She says sometimes people need reassurance and support to get them through a bad time.

Stepping On Class Being Offered In Green Lake

Ripon Senior Activity Center Executive Director Noreen Johnson will be one of three instructors teaching a stepping on class at the Green Lake Senior Center. The class begins next Tuesday. “It will be Tuesday afternoons for seven weeks from 1 to 3 pm at the Green Lake Senior Center. It’s through Green Lake and Waushara Counties’ Aging and Disability Resource Centers. There will be three of us that are switching off leading it. It’s a falls prevention class that features exercise and expert speakers. There’s a suggested donation of $15. Johnson says another class will be offered in Ripon and there is a waiting list people can get on for that class. To find out more call the Ripon Senior Center at 920-748-6225.

Berlin Police Department Feeling The Love

Someone out there is feeling the love for the Berlin Police Department. Officers found notes tucked under the windshield wipers of some of their squad cars recently. One of the notes read, “Thank you for keeping us safe. We depend on you every day. Please know we support you, respect you and appreciate everything law enforcement does for our community. Thank you Berlin Police Department.” The notes ended with a final thank you and were not signed.  Examples of three of the notes were posted on the department’s Facebook page. Berlin Police posted, “Citizens like this and many others make our rough days’ worth it.”

WFRV Switching To New Frequency

Officials at WFRV TV-5 in Green Bay say antennae users will have to rescan their TV sets when they make some changes at the end of the week. After Midnight on Friday viewers in Northeast Wisconsin will need to rescan their television sets if they receive WFRV via antennae. To rescan your TV set usually means using the menu or source function on your TV remote or converter box. WFRV has been installing a new transmitter, new antennae, and is changing to a new frequency.
