Duck Hunters Rescued From Eldorado Marsh
4 October 2019 News
Two duck hunters in skiffs got lost in the Eldorado Marsh Thursday when strong winds blew cattail bogs around changing the look of the landscape. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say 49-year-old Richard Olmstead of Appleton and 53-year-old Donald Peterson of Neenah were also blocked from the path they arrived from. They called for help and the County Communications Center was able to use GPS coordinates to narrow down their location to an area west of Dike Road. Sheriff’s deputies, the Fond du Lac Police Drone Unit, and the DNR responded. The hunters were able to follow the drone back to the area they used to access their hunting location. A conservation warden in a kayak was directed to them and was able to guide them back to the launch off Marsh Road. It took the hunters about 5 hours to get back to the launch area from when they arrived in the morning. Sheriff’s officials say Eldorado Marsh water levels are extremely high right now with the recent rainfall and those using the marsh should exercise caution.
