Orlando Arcia doubled with the bases loaded, and the Brewers shook off the fizz from their playoffs-clinching celebration to close on the division lead Thursday, beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 for their seventh straight victory. The Brewers earned at least a wild card with a 9-2 win on Wednesday night. The Brewers also moved within one game of the idle Cardinals for first place heading into the final weekend. the same status as a year ago when the Brewers also were a game out with three to play. The Nationals lead the Brewers by a game for the first Wild Card spot.
Milwaukee concludes with three games at Coors Field against the team it swept in the playoffs last year before losing to the Dodgers in the NL Championship Series. The Cardinals host the Cubs. Chase Anderson (8-4) allowed Aristides Aquino’s solo homer in five innings, then turned it over to a bullpen that’s the team’s strength. Josh Hader escaped a bases-loaded threat in the eighth and got the last four outs for his 37th save in 43 chances.
Aquino’s homer was the Reds’ 223rd of the season, setting a club record. They hit 222 in 2005.
Eric Thames felt hamstring discomfort after running out a grounder in the second inning and left the game as a precaution.
Friday night Zach Davies,(10-7), starts for Milwaukee against Colorado’s Antonio Senzattela (10-11). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM,WISS.
Elsewhere, Washington beat Philadelphia, 6-3.
The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of
the Milwaukee Bucks, has hired Dennis Cutts, Chaisson Allen and John Little as
assistant coaches. The three will work under Chase Buford, who was hired as the
Herd’s new head coach on July 29.
Cutts most recently was the head coach of NCAA Division I UC Riverside, a position
he held for three-and-a-half seasons from 2014-18, after serving one season as
interim head coach for the Highlanders in 2013-14. In 2014-15, he was a finalist for the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year – an annual award given to the top
first-year coach in Division I basketball. Prior to being head coach, Cutts, who has more than 25 years of coaching experience at the Division I level, was an assistant coach with UC Riverside for six seasons. He’s also held positions at Kansas State, San Jose State, Northern Arizona, Stephen F. Austin, Northland Pioneer College and Pima Community College throughout his reer.
Allen comes to the Herd after spending the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach and
manager of player development with the G League’s Capital City Go-Go. In his role,
he organized and ran the player development of four players who were called up to
the NBA, while the Go-Go finished its inaugural season 25-25. Before joining the Go-Go, Allen spent two years with the University of Miami (FL) in a player development role. Prior to that, Allen played professionally in Poland, Greece, Croatia, Turkey and Israel after finishing his collegiate career at Northeastern where he was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection.
Little joins the Herd after serving as a video coordinator for the past two seasons
at his alma mater, Northern Iowa. He returned to Northern Iowa after playing
professionally in Germany for 10 years. Little also served as a graduate assistant
with the Panthers after graduating from Northern Iowa.

The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, has traded the returning player rights to Xavier Munford and the 46th and 86th overall picks in the 2019 NBA G League Draft to the Delaware Blue Coats. In exchange, the Herd receives the returning player rights to D.J. Hogg and the 8th, 59th, and 64th overall picks in the 2019 NBA G League Draft.Hogg appeared in 43 games (11 starts) with the Blue Coats last season and averaged 10.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 block in 24.4 minutes per game. The 6-foot-9 forward went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft after spending three seasons at Texas A&M where he played in 91 games (52 starts). Munford played in 48 games (44 starts) with the Herd over the past two seasons, including 14 games in 2018-19. He also appeared in six games with the Bucks during the 2017-18 season.
Ripon College senior Page Pierce has been named Midwest Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Performer of the Week, as released Monday by the conference office. She helped the Red Hawks go 1-1 in their two games last week, including a 2-0 victory against Carroll University. An Economics major from Green Bay, Wis., Pierce scored two goals, while assisting on another in last week’s two games combined. With a goal in Saturday’s win, Pierce has now scored in four consecutive games. She currently has 43 career goals, which ranks fourth in program history. Pierce has four goals on the season, which is second on the team and is tied for fourth in the MWC. She is also tied for sixth in the conferernce with two assists.
