The Milwaukee Brewers clinched their second straight postseason appearance Wednesday night, with Ryan Braun’s grand slam sparking a 9-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that also tightened the NL Central race. The Brewers have won six in a row and 17 of 19 despite losing MVP Christian Yelich to a broken kneecap. There’s more at their fingertips — the division-leading Cardinals lost again on Wednesday, slicing their lead over the Brewers to 1 1/2 games. Milwaukee trails Washington by one game for the wild card lead. The Brewers jogged onto the field and formed a scrum by second base after Junior Guerra got Christian Colon on a grounder for the final out. Last season, they raced from a five-game deficit to the NL Central title by going 19-6 after Sept. 1. They caught the Cubs and won a tiebreaker at Wrigley Field, then swept the Rockies and reached the NL Championship Series before losing in seven games to the Dodgers. Braun, who had a solo shot in a 4-2 win in the series opener got the celebration started early Wednesday with his eighth career grand slam in the first inning, connecting off Tyler Mahle (2-12). When Eric Thames followed with another homer, the party was on. Keston Hiura also connected off Mahle, whose last win was May 31. Starter Jordan Lyles (12-8) contributed an infield single and scored a run during the Brewers’ surge to an 8-1 lead after three innings. Lyles gave up Eugenio Suarez’s 49th homer, which moved him ahead of Mike Schmidt and Adrian Beltre for the modern NL record by a third baseman. This is sixth overall playoff spot for the Brewers.
The teams close out their series today as the Brewers send Chase Anderson (7-4) to the mound against Luis Castillo (15-7). First pitch is at 11:35 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS. Milwaukee finishes out the regular season with a three-game series at Colorado, while St. Louis hosts the Cubs over the weekend.
Elsewhere in the N.L Central Arizona beat St. Louis 9-7 and the Pirates beat the Cubs 4-2.
The Packers host the Eagles tonight to open the fourth week of the NFL season. Despite being 3-0, Green Bay’s offense ranks 28th in the league. Head coach Matt LaFleur said he would like to see his key playmakers, like Davante Adams, get the ball more. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he also would like to get the ball in the hands of tight end Jimmy Graham. Graham has gone back-to-back games without a reception, which is the first time that has happened since his rookie season in 2010. Defensively, a big concern is Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. The Eagles are 1-2.
On the injury front, linebackers Kyler Fackrell and Za’Darius Smith and wide receiver Jake Kumerow are listed as questionable.
The game can be heard on 102.3, The Bug, with the pregame starting at 5:00 and the kickoff at 7:20.
Wisconsin hosts Northwestern this Saturday. The 3-0 Badgers are ranked 8th in the latest AP poll while the Wildcats come in at 1-2. Wisconsin is coming off a convincing home victory against Michigan last week.
