Sports for September 24th

After a day off Monday, the Brewers are at Cincinnati tonight for the first of a three-game series.  The Brewers hold the second Wild Card position in the National League but trail the Nationals by just a half-game.  Adrian Houser, who’s 6-7, starts for Milwaukee against the Reds Sonny Gray, who’s 11-7.  First pitch is at 5:40 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

In the N.L. Central on Monday, Washington beat Philadelphia 7-2 and the Cardinals won at Arizona 9-7.   The Cardinals lead the Central Division by 3 ½ games over the Brewers.

The Milwaukee Brewers are charging toward a playoff spot without Christian Yelich. And even while injured, Yelich is inching closer to a nice individual honor. Yelich is currently the National League’s batting leader, although Arizona’s Ketel Marte and Washington’s Anthony Rendon are close on his heels. Out with a fractured kneecap, Yelich can only watch as his team chases a postseason berth. The batting race may not be foremost on his mind, but that’s coming down to the wire too — with Yelich’s .329 average holding the lead. Marte is also batting .329, with Rendon at .325.  It would be the second straight batting title for Yelich, who also won NL MVP honors last year. The last player to win back-to-back NL batting titles was Larry Walker in 1998 and 1999.

Head coach Matt LaFleur announced the team did not practice on Monday. Instead, it was massages and meetings for the Packers as the Packers prepare for Thursday night’s game against the Eagles at Lambeau Field.  Cornerback Tramon Williams was asked how do you get ready for such a short turnaround.  He said “”Same thing you do when your teacher comes to you and tells you the test is Wednesday when you thought it was Friday…you cram.”

Offensive lineman Billy Turner says he feels pretty good after Sunday’s game against Denver. “Fortunate enough that the Thursday night game for us falls within the first four weeks which is nice,” Turner said. “It’s different when the game falls on week 10, 11, 12 after you have ten weeks under your belt.”

LaFleur added he would watch injuries closely this week. Tight end Jimmy Graham continues to deal with a groin/quad injury after playing against the Broncos.

In Monday night Football, the Bears won at Washington over the Redskins, 31-15.  Former Packer Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix made two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown as the Bears came up with five turnovers to improve to 2-1.  The Redskins dropped to 0-3.

A person familiar with the situation says the University of Kansas received a notice of allegations from the NCAA on Monday that alleges significant violations within its storied men’s basketball program. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the NCAA nor the school had announced the notice, which was first reported by Yahoo Sports. That initial report, citing unnamed sources, said the notice included three Level 1 violations tied primarily to recruiting, lack of institutional control and a responsibility charge leveled against Hall of Fame coach Bill Self. Yahoo also reported that Kansas was given notice of a secondary violation in football tied to then-coach David Beaty. That violation involved the use of an extra coach during practice.
