Air And Ground Traffic Enforcement In Winnebago County Today

The State Patrol will be teaming up with Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies to watch for speeders and reckless drivers on Interstate 41 today. The State Patrol will use air planes in combination with patrol cars on the ground that will be watching for speeding, tailgating or other reckless driving behaviors. State Patrol Captain Ryan Chaffee of the Fond du Lac Post says, “We publicly announce many of these enforcement efforts to reinforce that our goal is voluntary compliance with traffic laws.”  If weather conditions are unfavorable for flying, only the patrol cars will be doing the enforcement.

DNR Releases Annual Drinking Water Report

The state’s Department of Natural Resources says 99. 1 percent of the more than 11,500 public water systems in Wisconsin provided water that met safe drinking standards in 2018. The DNR released its annual drinking water report Monday. Safe Drinking Water Loans for more than $57 million were awarded to 56 communities including Redgranite, which received nearly $425,000 for infrastructure improvements. According to the 34-page report 28 communities got over $12.7 million in total funding through a Private Lead Service Line Replacement Fund. Some of those communities included Fond du Lac, Markesan, North Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, and Waupaca.

Well Water Testing In Plainfield Saturday 

The Waushara Commoners and Thrivent are sponsoring a free nitrate water test Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm at the Plainfield Public Library.  To participate bring an 8 ounce sample of your well water in a clean glass or plastic container. Make sure to run your tap for about two minutes first. A 5-minute test will determine the level of nitrate in your drinking water. If you would like to follow up with in-depth testing of your drinking water there will be a form to order sample kits available at the library.  The library is located at 126 South Main Street in Plainfield. A similar event in Pine River in July resulted in 80 wells being tested.  

Nineteenth Amendment Presentation

The 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed 100 years ago this year.  It has several ties to Ripon. The League of Women Voters of the Ripon Area and the Ripon Historical Society will host a presentation Thursday, at 7:00 pm in the Ripon Historical Society at 508 Watson Street.  A representative for Senator Tammy Baldwin will be presenting an official copy of a Congressional Record Statement Senator Baldwin presented to the US Senate acknowledging the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.  Senator Baldwin presented it to the Senate on Wednesday, June 10th the anniversary of the day Wisconsin became the first state in the nation to ratify the amendment.  Ellen Sorensen of the League of Women Voters says the statement also references nationally known and renowned suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt of Ripon. She says Wisconsin and Ripon both had roles in the ratification of the amendment. Following the presentation there will be a question and answer period.  The public is welcome to attend.

Great Conversations

The Ripon Education Foundation’s Great Conversations fundraising dinner isn’t until next month, but if you want tickets there is less than a week to secure them. Susan Mokler is on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. She says it is through fundraisers like it that they are able to give out student scholarships and give out grants for innovative programs teachers come up with. There will be a leisurely dinner and enlightening conversation led by topic specialists on Saturday, October 5th in the Great Hall at Harwood Memorial Union at Ripon College. “This year we have 15 of those table hosts and each of them has a topic that they want to share.  We as a board of directors look as this as our contribution to adult education in the community.” Those attending get to list three choices for their table topics and hosts, and pick from three dinner options. Tickets are $50 each with $20 going to the Foundation. They can be purchased at the school district office, Ripon Drug or through the Foundations’ website, which also lists the table topics and their hosts.

Green Lake Harvest Fest Coming Up

Green Lake is gearing up for its 31st Annual Harvest Fest at the end of the month. Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Liane Walsh says there will be dozens of activities in Green Lake on Saturday and Sunday, September 28th and 29th.  “We’re on our 31st Annual Harvest Fest and come on out we have bands and food. We have Taste of Green Lake on Saturday and Sunday, crafters about 100 of those, a silent auction, and its just a wonderful time to come out.” Events will run from about 8 am to 10 pm that Saturday and from 6:30 am to about 4 pm that Sunday.
