Sports for September 13th

Ryan Braun hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the third inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 Thursday to complete a four-game sweep that extended their winning streak to seven.  At 78-68, the Brewers are 10 games over .500 for the first time since mid-June.  Before the game, the Brewers said star Christian Yelich won’t need surgery on his broken right kneecap but likely will not return this season.  Miami went 1-6 on its homestand, dropped to an NL-worst 51-95 and is headed to its first 100-loss season since 2013.  Braun, bothered by a bad back for much of the season, broke a 1-1 tie against Caleb Smith (8-10) with an opposite-field drive to right, his 19th home run this season.  Gio González and four relievers retired Miami’s final 18 batters after Lewis Brinson’s run-scoring single in the fourth. Freddy Peralta (6-3) struck out three in two innings, and Josh Hader fanned two batters for his 31st save in 37 chances.  González allowed two runs and seven hits in four innings. He is 0-2 in 12 starts since beating Philadelphia on May 15. Smith (8-10) gave up three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Mike Moustakas’ sacrifice fly in the first was offset by Miguel Rojas’ RBI single in the bottom half.  The Brewers open a huge weekend series tonight in St. Louis.  RHP Adam Houser (6-5, 3.59) starts for Milwaukee against another right-hander, Adam Wainwright, 11-9. First pitch is at 7:15 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Thursday, St. Louis beat Colorado 10-3, the Cubs downed the Padres 4-1, the Pirates over the Giants 4-2 and the Reds downed the Mariners 11-5. The Cardinals lead the Cubs and Brewers by four games. The Brewers are tied with the Cubs for the first Wild Cart spot. The Mets and Phillies are tied for the second spot, two games behind Milwaukee and Chicago.

Meanwhile RHP Brandon Woodruff (left oblique strain) showed no ill effects from throwing to batters in a simulated game Wednesday.

The Packers defense knows the challenge will be tough facing the rival Vikings on Sunday. Minnesota rolled in its opener while only throwing the ball only 10 times.   For perspective, Green Bay’s Za’Darius Smith had 10 quarterback pressures by his lonesome in the Packers’ opener. It will be a unique challenge. The Vikings are expected to try and establish their running game.  Quarterback Kirk Cousins only threw 10 passes against the Falcons, completing eight. On the Packers injury front, there is a big question mark right now for starting left tackle David Bakhtiari, who did not practice Thursday. He has a back issue that is listed on the injury report and coach Matt LaFleur would not divulge whether Thursday’s rest was a precautionary measure or something more serious for Bakhtiari  Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field starts at noon.  You can hear all of the action beginning with the pregame at 10:00, on 102.3 FM, The Bug.

The Green Bay Packers are set to honor late Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback

Bart Starr in a special ceremony at halftime of this Sunday’s Packers-Vikings game.

In Thursday Night Football, Tampa Bay held on to beat Carolina on the road, 20-14.  The Buccaneers stopped the Panthers on a fourth and goal with a little over a minute to preserve the win.
