Sports for September 6th

In a defensive battle also marked by sloppy offense and penalties, the Packers showed everyone their new defense  and just enough from Aaron Rodgers on Thursday night to kick off the league’s 100th season with a 10-3 victory over the Bears at Soldier Field. A lack of action in the preseason clearly damaged both offenses, and Rodgers at times looked uncomfortable in the attack designed by new coach Matt LaFleur. But the two-time MVP hit  Jimmy Graham for the game’s only touchdown in the second quarter.   From there, it was an aggressive defense in the latest edition of the NFL’s longest rivalry, which the Packers now lead 98-95-6. Green Bay has won 16 of the last 19 regular-season meetings, and Rodgers is 17-5. Chicago’s defense hardly slacked, getting five sacks — tying the most it has had against Rodgers. But it could do little with the ball and the Packers had five sacks of Mitchell Trubisky, who never found his stride. Former Bears safety Adrian Amos picked off an end-zone pass into double coverage with 1:58 remaining, the only turnover of the contest.  The Bears scored in the first quarter to take a 3-0 as Eddy Pineiro hit a 38-yard field goal before Rodgers touchdown pass gave the Packers a 7-3 halftime lead.  Mason Crosby made a 39-yard field goal in the final period for Green Bay for the final score.  Rodgers completed 18 of 30 passes for 203 yards.  Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught four passes for 52 yards and Davante Adams hauled in four catches for 36 yards.  Aaron Jones led the Pack in rushing with 39 yards on 18 carries.  Mitchell Trubiskey was 26 of 45 for 228 yards.  Wide receiver Allen Robinson hauled in seven passes for 102 yards while Mike Davis led the Bears in rushing with 19 yards on five carries.  The Packers host the Vikings next Sunday.

The Brewers lost to the Cubs 10-5 last night at Miller Park in the first game of a huge-four game series. The loss dropped the Brewers 7 ½ games behind the Cardinals and five games in back of the Cubs as Milwaukee’s playoff hopes dwindle with 23 games left. Hernan Perez, Yasmani Grandal and Cory Spangenberg all homered for the Brewers, who had just pulled into a 4-4 tie on Grandal’s two-run shot in the fifth when the Cubs started making things difficult for Matt Albers and Drew Pomeranz. Pinch-hitter David Bote reached on an infield single to open the sixth, and Ben Zobrist — who reached base five times — also singled for his third hit. Two batters later, Albers walked Kris Bryant to load the bases. That prompted a call for for left-hander Drew Pomeranz, who had not been charged with a run in any of his previous eight appearances. He drew Anthony Rizzo, who lined a sacrifice fly to right fielder Christian Yelich. As Yelich got into position, Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia was jumping up and down on second base trying to get Yelich’s attention.  Zobrist had read “hit” off the bat, and was more than halfway to third. A strong throw to second base could have doubled him up and ended the inning before Bote could score. Yelich threw home as Bote scored.  Then after an infield hit loaded the bases, Kyle Schwarber lined the first pitch deep into the right field seats to give the Cubs a 9-4 lead. Chicago starter Jose Quintana improved to 13-8.  He went five innings, giving up four runs on four hits.  Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson lasted four innings and gave up two runs on five hits.  Matt Albers took the loss and drops to 5-9.  The teams continue their series tonight as left-hander Cole Hamels goes for the Cubs against Brewers right-hander Zach Davies. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Thursday, the Reds edged the Phillies 4-3, the Cardinals shut out the Giants 10-0 and the Pirates lost to the Marlins 10-7.
