Humane Society officials in Fond du Lac are caring for a dog found abandoned in a home over the weekend. Police got a call Sunday afternoon after a man who was mowing a lawn on South Hickory Street saw a “skinny dog” jumping up and down in the window of a home. The dog and a cat were removed from the home. The Fond du Lac Humane Society posted information about the dog on their Facebook page saying the dog was emaciated, starved and dehydrated.  The animal shelter in Fond du Lac has been giving the dog food and water in small amounts around the clock to help it recover. The shelter has a fund on its website called the Sweetie Medical Fund where donations can be made to help with medical costs for the dog.

Kmart Closing In Ripon

The Kmart in Ripon will be closing this December. The company confirmed it in a statement to WLUK-TV Fox 11 in Green Bay Saturday. A company official says a liquidation sale will begin the middle of this month with a plan to close the store by mid-December. Kmart has been in Ripon for 29 years. Company owner Sears Holdings is going through bankruptcy proceedings and last month announced the closings of 26 Sears and Kmart stores. The Ripon store was not on that list.  Ripon Mayor Gary Will says he is a frequent shopper at the Kmart in Ripon, but stores all over the country are being hurt by online shopping. He intends to reach out to Envision Greater Fond du Lac to see what they can do and is hoping the store will find new purposes when it closes. “It’s a big store and maybe it gets divided up and some other doors open for some other businesses. I always like to look at the glass half full and not half empty and this might be an opportunity for someone else or multiple someone elses.” Someone mentioned to him the possibility of a pickup and drop off location for Amazon and he frequently gets asked about bringing a Target store to Ripon. He says no matter what businesses need customer support or they too will fail.

Blue Ribbon Committee On School Funding Comes Up With Suggestions

State Senator Luther Olsen is hoping some suggestions the Blue Ribbon Committee on School Funding came up with will make their way through the legislature this fall. He co-chairs the committee. One suggestion was to provide more help for school districts with declining enrollment. They would also like to get the school formula for schools increased for districts dealing with other student issues as well. “Another thing that we know through research is it cost more to educate kids that are living in poverty and bilingual bipolar.” The state lawmaker from Ripon says smaller districts with declining enrollments will only consolidate as a last resort so they also are making suggestions to make it more tempting for them to consolidate if it is feasible.

Credit Freezes

For those that fear identity theft freezing your credit is an option that could protect your financial assets. Lara Sutherlin is the Administrator for the State’s Trade and Consumer Protection Division. She and her husband ran into a situation where someone tried to gain access to their financial assets. They froze their credit. She says with several high profile breaches it is an option and not as difficult to do as it used to be. “You to have to unfreeze it with every credit monitoring service, but the reality is sometimes that is what needs to get done in order to protect your identity and your money.” She says they have a good team that deals with identity theft and they can walk you through the process by calling their hotline at 1-800-422-7218.
