Beaver Dam Man Who Crashed Into School Bound Over For Trial
The 22-year-old Beaver Dam man who crashed his car into the north wall of the Beaver Dam Middle School last week has been bound over for trial. Roy Cortez waived his right to a preliminary hearing on a felony fleeing from police charge when he appeared in Dodge County court Wednesday. Police estimate he was going up to 90 miles an hour on Grove Street when he went off the road. The impact from the crash left a hole in the wall that was seven feet wide and 30 feet tall. Police were trying to pick up Cortez for a domestic dispute when he fled from them. He will be arraigned on October 2nd.
Northwestern Trail Improvements
Look for improvements to a 2.4 mile section of the Northwestern Trail from Ripon to the Green Lake County line. Fond du Lac County Parks and Planning Director Sam Tobias says this fall they will be regrading and resurfacing the stretch of the trail from Pacific Street in Ripon to County Highway PP. It’s a $65,000 project. But in addition to that an old wooden bridge over Silver Creek will be replaced with a 100 foot long metal framed bridge with wooden decking. That’s about $100,000 improvement, which they can do thanks to a snowmobile grant they received last fall. But it will also cost another $168,000 to have the prebuilt bridge put into place. He says they did something similar with a bridge on the Peebles Trail years ago, but that was about a 70-foot bridge. “It was a real white-knuckle thing to watch them even just back the darn semi-truck back into where the creek location was and then lift it with a crane way up into the air get it all swiveled around and then slowly dropping in place.” Tobias says the resurfacing work will start sometime in October and should take a week to ten days.
State Highway 116 Improvement Project In Winnebago County
Governor Tony Evers this week signed a $1 million contract to improve nearly 5 miles of State Highway 116 in Winnebago County. That 4.7 mile stretch of road is from State Highway 91 in the town of Rushford to State Highway 21 in the city of Omro. Construction will begin Monday, September 9th and should finish in early October. Highway 116 will remain open during construction. Motorists will encounter temporary, single lane closures with flagging operations. Northeast Asphalt of Greenville is the prime contractor for the project.
Dental Health Can Affect Overall Health
The Oral Health Coordinator for Fond du Lac County says if you take care of your teeth they will take care of you. Samantha Twohig says left unchecked an infection can cause real health issues especially if you have a chronic illness like asthma, heart disease or diabetes. “When you have an abscess that’s a significant infection that does run throughout your entire body so left untreated that can have long term effects on a large number of different health systems.” She notes when a child has significant decay it affects their ability to eat, sleep and do well in school. They may also be picked on for the appearance of their teeth. She says in some extreme cases bad dental health can even lead to death. Twohig runs the county’s Save a Smile program for children and adults on medical assistance or who are income-challenged. It operates out of the county’s health department.
Neshkoro Horse Pull
The 28th Annual Neshkoro Lions Club Horse Pull and Marquette County ATV/UTV Rally will be held Saturday at Stan-O-Gene Park Horse Arena. It’s located a mile north of Neshkoro on Highway 73, just watch for the signs. Dale Birschbach is with the Lions Club. He says the money they raise for the event goes toward a number of local charitable efforts and Lions Club vision programs. The Kiddie Carnival is from 11 am to 1 pm with the Horse Pulls starting at 1 pm. Tracy Voss will perform from 5 to 9 pm. There’s a bon fire at dusk, food and drink, and a cash raffle. Birschbach says if the event is successful Saturday they hope to expand on it next year.
