Ripon Common Council Nearing Action On Mitchell Donation

28 August 2019 News

Ripon’s Common Council is getting nearer to making a decision about which proposal should get the Lloyd Mitchell grant money. City Attorney Lud Wurtz told the Council Monday night that the city had reached its obligation of accepting the nearly $485,000 from the Mitchell estate and has time to make a decision, which of three proposals it should go toward. But the item will be placed on the Council’s next meeting agenda as an action item, which the Council will have to commit to one of the proposed projects. Representatives for each of the projects made pitches to the Council this week. Tom Moniz talked about the merits of a new pavilion at Murray Park, A. J. Olson talked about the proposed Grace and Lloyd Mitchell Heritage Plaza and Mitchell Cultural Center, and Senior Center Director Noreen Johnson talked about a proposed Community Center. The Park and Recreation Committee have already recommended the pavilion project, which also has the backing of the Chamber of Commerce, Ripon Main Street and Ripon College. Alderman James Werch said no matter which proposal the Council chooses the city is already a winner with the grant.
