Marcell Ozuna’s bases-loaded double keyed a six-run second inning and surging St. Louis pounded out a 12-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night. The Cardinals, who have won five straight, jumped on starter Gio Gonzalez (2-2) for eight runs in the first two innings en route to their 14th victory in 17 games. Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong each homered and drove in three runs for St. Louis, which moved to a season-high 14 games above .500. The Cardinals extended their lead in the N.L. Central to three games over idle Chicago. The third-place Brewers dropped 5 1/2 back. Despite being staked to a 9-1 lead, starter Adam Wainwright lasted just 3 2-3 innings, throwing 90 pitches. He allowed two runs on six hits with three walks. John Gant (9-0) relieved Wainwright and struck out three in 2 1/3 hitless innings for the victory. Molina’s bases-loaded single with two outs in the first put the Cardinals up 2-0. Molina’s fifth homer, a solo shot in the fourth, made it 9-1. DeJong added a two-run homer, his 24th, in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The Cardinals manufactured a run to open the decisive second when Harrison Bader reached on an infield single, advanced on a sacrifice and took third on an errant pickoff throw by Gonzalez. Dexter Fowler singled in Bader to make it 3-0. Tommy Edman singled and Paul Goldschmidt walked. Ozuna cleared the bases with a double down the right-field line. The Brewers managed nine hits, two each by Christian Yelich, Eric Thames and Cory Spangenberg. Spangenberg and Lorenzo Cain drove in a run apiece for Milwaukee. Third-baseman Mike Moustakas left the game in the third inning with pain in his left palm and wrist after being struck by a hard-hit bouncer by Harrison Bader the previous inning. Game two of their series is tonight as RHP Miles Mikolas, who’s 7-13, goes for the Cardinals against the Brewers right-hander Adrian Houser, who’s 6-5. First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central, the Reds beat the Marlins 6-3 and the Phillies edged the Pirates 6-5. The Cubs had the day off.
The Packers have received some good news. According to NFL Network, Linebacker Oren Burks’ injury will not require surgery. Burks injured his pectoral muscle in the Packers first preseason game against the Houston Texans. Reports initially feared Burks had suffered a torn pectoral muscle. However the NFL Network report has him returning soon. Burks’ return comes at a good time after his replacement, undrafted rookie Curtis Bolton suffered an injury against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday. The Packers are still gathering information on Bolton’s knee injury. Burks, a third round pick in 2018, played in 14 games last season and had 24 tackles. Burks is set to play a larger role in his second year in the NFL.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has some strong feelings about the way Indianapolis Colts fans reacted to the announcement of Andrew Luck deciding to retire. Rodgers said Monday he thought it was “disgusting” because Luck made a very tough decision. The news broke that Luck, at the age of 29, would walk away from the NFL while the Colts were playing a home preseason game against the Bears. Fans began booing their once-beloved quarterback as he exited the field. Rodgers also blamed the process of the news breaking during the game. He called Luck’s decision, “selfless. Not selfish.”
