Ripon Common Council Discusses Next Step For American House
27 August 2019 News
Ripon Mayor Gary Will and several Common Council members who recently toured the former American House at 230 Watson Street feel the building has to come down. They expressed those thoughts at last night’s Common Council meeting. The city has been trying to find a buyer for the property for the past year. Meanwhile over the years the building has deteriorated with leaking water, black mold and other damage. Will says they got an estimate that it would cost about $100,000 to tear the building down. He says the city has to repay the state $300,000 it used for a revolving loan fund, but once it does the city can apply for the money itself and can use it for blighted properties or to benefit low to moderate income individuals. He says some of that money could be used to raze the building. But before the Council decides the next step they want to get the opinion of Main Street Manager Craig Tebon who couldn’t be at last night’s meeting. They will be inviting him to the next Council meeting. Will says the property will be for sale even if the building is removed from it.
