Mike Moustakas teed off for a three-run home run in a four-run first inning and the Brewers held on long enough for a rain-shortened, 5-3 win over the Cardinals to finish a 2-4 trip on Wednesday at Busch Stadium, where starter Adrian Houser and four relievers kept St. Louis at bay for seven innings before the game was halted in the middle of the eighth and eventually called after a one-hour, six-minute delay. The win over longtime nemesis Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals denied St. Louis a three-game sweep and kept the Brewers from falling five games out of first place for the first time all season. Instead, they are 3 1/2 games behind the Cubs, who outlasted the Giants at Wrigley Field in a home run derby Wednesday to power past the Cardinals into first place in the National League Central. Houser went 5 1/3 innings and picked up the win to improve to 6-5. He gave up six hits and three runs, two of which were unearned. The Brewers committed two errors. Wainwright took the loss and drops to 9-9. Milwaukee is off today before returning home to face the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday evening. Jordan Lyles, who’s 7-8, is scheduled to start for the Brewers against the D-backs right-hander Merrill Kelly, who’s 9-12.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Thursday, the Cubs won a 12-11 slugfest over the Giants, Washington bombed Pittsburgh 11- 1 and the Reds downed the Padres 4-2. The Cubs now lead the Cardinals by a half-game and the Brewers by 3 ½.
The Packers are meeting the Oakland Raiders tonight in Winnipeg. It’s not known if quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play. After missing last Thursday’s game against the Ravens in Baltimore because of a back issue, Rodgers practiced Monday and Tuesday but coach Matt LaFleur has given no indication that he will play tonight. Green Bay is 1-1 in the preseason. The pregame starts at 5:00 and the kickoff is at 7:00. The game can be heard on 102.3, The Bug.
Wisconsin receiver Quintez Cephus has returned to practice and his coach says pending eligibility issues stem from a lack of credits because he was expelled amid sexual assault allegations this spring. Cephus was charged a year ago with sexually assaulting two women in his apartment in April 2018. University officials expelled him before the spring semester ended, but a jury acquitted Cephus earlier this month. Chancellor Rebecca Blank allowed him to return to school and rejoin the Badgers on Monday although the athletic department says he can’t play in a game until the undisclosed eligibility issues are resolved. Chryst told reporters Wednesday that Cephus practiced with the team and that Cephus’ issues relate to a lack of credits. He declined to elaborate.
