Trial Postponed For Neenah Man Involved In Fatal Boating Accident

A trial scheduled for a 45-year-old Neenah man facing charges for a boating accident on Lake Winnebago last summer that killed two sisters has been postponed. Brian Sullivan’s trial on two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle had been scheduled for five days starting July 13th next year, but there was a conflict with a witness’s schedule so Winnebago County Judge Scott Woldt signed an order this week adjourning the case. A new trial date hasn’t been scheduled. On August 18th of last year Sullivan was driving one of two boats that collided. The collision killed 26-year-old Lauren Laabs and her 20-year-old sister Cassie Laabs. The two women were thrown from their boat during the collision and drowned. They were not wearing life jackets. Their father Kim was driving their boat. Sullivan’s blood alcohol content was allegedly above the legal limit.

Watertown Man Pleads To Sexual Assault Of A Child Charge

A 27-year-old Watertown man is facing up to 25 years in prison after pleading no contest to a second degree sexual assault of a child charge. Juan Cagal Malaga entered the plea during a hearing in Dodge County court yesterday. He will be sentenced on November 22nd. Prosecutors say the victim was a stepchild. The assault occurred while the child’s mother was at work in April of last year. District Attorney Kurt Klomberg praised the work of Assistant District Attorney James Sempf on the case.

Reunification Stressed In Schools Role In Active Threat Situations

Ripon Area School District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says one thing they will stress with parents in the event of an active threat is the reunification process. She says if something were to occur they would get the word out via a mass notification system including voice messages, text messages, emails, their Facebook and webpage. But that would be limited to that an incident has happened and which school it occurred at. All the schools would be locked down if that were the case. She says they don’t want people showing up at the scene adding chaos for police, fire and EMS officials. “In an event like that although your first instinct is to get to that school and get ahold of your child that is the last place the police, and fire and EMS would want us to be.” Instead she recommends making sure your phone is charged for notifications and that you have photo ID available you can show at the site they pick for reuniting you with your child or children. The high school was used for active threat training last week involving police, fire, EMS, and the school district.

Back To School Sales Advice

The Administrator for the State’s Division of Trade and Consumer Protection says those shopping for back-to-school bargains have to beware of the fine print and limits on sales. Lara Sutherlin says bargains can be had but it truly is a case of buyer beware. “You should read the fine print, you should when you’re shopping online you be wary of any return policies. If you’re looking for sales you should look at restrictions on the quantities, the sales hours, how you return things.” She also recommends checking out the store’s policy on price matching and paying attention to pricing errors when you get to the checkout counter or are checking out online. She says if you feel you are being overcharged speak up about it.
