The Nationals matched a team record with eight home runs – including two by Juan Soto – in a 16-8 rout of the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday as Washington took two of three from a fellow contender in the NL playoff race. Matt Adams and Victor Robles hit back-to-back homers in the first to give the Nationals a 4-0 lead, and Anthony Rendon and Soto did the same in the third as the advantage ballooned to 13-0. Washington has gone for back-to-back homers ten times this season. Soto homered again in the fifth and now has 28 on the year. Brian Dozier had his first multi-homer game of the season and now has 19 homers this year. Adam Eaton – who had a two-run triple in the second – hit his 10th homer in the fifth. Erick Fedde (4-2) won his third consecutive start, allowing four runs on ten hits over five innings and striking out two. Chase Anderson (5-3) lost for the first time since June 21, allowing a career-high ten runs on nine hits with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings. Ben Gamel hit a solo homer in the fourth while Mike Moustakas hit a three-run homer in the fifth and two-run shot in the ninth. The Brewers have lost four of six while trying to keep pace in both the NL Central and wild card standings. Washington scored 30 runs in the final two games against Milwaukee but only won Sunday – falling 15-14 in 14 innings Saturday night after closer Sean Doolittle blew a three-run lead in the ninth. Catcher Yasmani Grandal was out of the lineup after manager Craig Counsell said the two-time All-Star lost an excessive amount of weight during Saturday’s 5 hour, 40-minute game. Grandal entered in the eighth as a pinch hitter. Brewers: RHP Zach Davies (8-5, 3.74 ERA) starts for Milwaukee on Monday at division rival St. Louis. The Cardinals will start right-hander Dakota Hudson, who 11-6. First pitch is at 6:45 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
In other Brewers news, Milwaukee recalled RHP Jay Jackson and RHP Aaron Wilkerson from Triple A-San Antonio on Sunday while optioning RHP Freddy Peralta and RHP Ray Black there. The Brewers used nine relievers, including Peralta and Black, on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Sunday, the Cubs beat the Pirates 7-1 and the Cardinals edged the Reds 5-4. The Cardinals and Cubs are tied for first in the division while the Brewers are two games out.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was held out of Sunday’s training camp practice as a precaution. Rodgers is dealing with back tightness which kept him from playing in the Packers second preseason game. Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur said Rodgers is day-to-day and hasn’t made a decision whether not he plays on Thursday. Without no. 12 under center, LaFleur called Sunday’s practice “sloppy.” Sunday saw the return of running back Jamaal Williams, fullback Malcolm Johnson and receiver Trevor Davis. Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari missed Sunday’s practice due to a personal matter. Packers tight end Jimmy Graham left practice after jamming his finger on a pass during team drills. LaFleur did not know the severity of the injury. Today is the final training camp practice open to the public. Practice starts at 1:30 p.m.
The Packers will play in Winnipeg against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Green Bay Packers receiver J’Mon Moore put it best on his caption on his Instagram story, “Nothing But God That I’m Still Here.” Moore was involved in an car crash Friday afternoon going east on Wisconsin 29 outside of Green Bay that left the driver’s side of his white Mercedes with severe damage. Packers Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said Saturday he heard Moore was “doing OK” but hadn’t spoke to him. Moore’s car collided with a black pickup truck.
Former Texas Longhorns standout and No. 4 overall NFL draft pick Cedric Benson has reportedly died. The 36-year old Benson crashed his motorcycle into a minivan in northwest Austin on Saturday night. One other person was killed and two others were injured in the accident. He began his NFL career with the Chicago Bears after being selected No. 4 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. Benson enjoyed his most success as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, recording more than 1,000 yards during three consecutive seasons, including a career best 1,251 yards in 2009. Benson made his last NFL appearance in 2012, playing in five games for the Green Bay Packers.
