The Ripon Common Council last night discussed the Lloyd Mitchell estate donation at more length. For months the Park and Recreation Committee has received proposals for use of the donation of more than $484,000 and narrowed it down to two proposals a new pavilion for Murray Park and as a part of the funding needed for a new Senior Center/Community Center. The committee had unanimously recommended the Murray Park pavilion proposal, but Council members wanted more information about it and whether the money could be used toward the Senior Center/Community Center proposal which has an estimated cost of more than $1.5 million. Prior to the Council’s meeting they received a third proposal, but some Council members felt it would be unfair to consider it because those proposing it had skipped or bypassed the committee’s vetting. Backers of the Murray Park pavilion proposal have the support of Ripon Main Street, the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce, and Ripon College. They also say baseball tournaments held at the park would bring in more than $7,000 in economic impact per day of those tournaments. The city has until December to decide what to do with the donation or risk losing it. The Council will tackle the issue again at its next meeting.
