Jordan Lyles’ second stint in a Brewers uniform is off to a good start.   Lyles did help bring some stability to a starting rotation in need of it Wednesday night by delivering five capable innings in a 4-2 win over the A’s at the Oakland Coliseum. Lorenzo Cain hit the game’s second pitch for a home run and Christian Yelich and Mike Moustakas also drove in a run apiece to back Lyles, who pitched sparingly out of the bullpen for the Brewers late last season but was re-acquired in a trade with the Pirates on Monday to help a starting rotation beset by injury and underperformance.  Lyles gave up three hits and one run while striking out four and walking two.  Josh Hader pitched the ninth and picked up his 24th save.  Ryan Braun and Orlando Arcia went 2-4 as the Brewers managed nine hits, eight of which were off starting pitcher Brett Anderson, who’s record dropped to 9-7.  The two  teams close out their series this afternoon as Chase Anderson, who’s 5-2, starts for Milwaukee against Oakland’s Homer Bailey, who’s 9-7.  First pitch is at 2:37 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Wednesday, the Reds beat the Pirates 4-1 while the Cubs blanked the Cardinals 2-0.  The Cubs and Cardinals are tied for first in the division and the Brewers are a game out.

The Brewers made a couple of last minute deals before Wednesday’s 3:00 p.m. deadline.  Milwaukee acquired left-hander Drew Pomeranz and righty Ray Black from the San Francisco Giants for infield prospect Mauricio Dubon.  The Brewers also traded first-baseman Jesus Aguilar to the Rays.  The deal means Ryan Braun will see more action at first base.

One day after Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was upset at his entire team, he was angry at one individual player, tossing safety Josh Jones out of practice after Jones tossed a teammate to the ground. Tackling in practice is taboo with the new coach. LaFleur made it clear to his players going into camp that he wouldn’t tolerate that which could lead to a player getting hurt.   Meanwhile on the injury front Aaron Jones sat out of practice with hamstring tightness.  However rookie safety Darnell Savage was back to work after sitting out Tuesday.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is starting to look more comfortable with LaFleur’s offense.  On Wednesday he used an audible to hook up with receiver Geronimo Allison who made perhaps the best reception so far in camp, as he jumped back and over the head of a defender to make the catch.

The Green Bay Packers have claimed LB Markus Jones off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens and waived/injured CB Javien Hamilton. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transactions Wednesday.

Jones, a 6-foot-3, 249-pound rookie out of Angelo State, was originally signed by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent on May 3. During his four-year collegiate career, he appeared in 45 games with 41 starts, recording 226 tackles, a school-record 37 sacks, 77.5 tackles for a loss, 11 forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 12 blocked kicks. As a senior, Jones was named the Division II National Defensive Player of the Year and finished sixth in voting for the Harlon Hill Award (D-II equivalent of the Heisman Trophy). He will wear No. 59 for the Packers.
