Ryan Braun and Keston Hiura homered, Yasmani Grandal hit a go-ahead single and Josh Hader made a lights-out relief appearance to lift the Brewers over the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 Wednesday.  Grandal delivered his two-run single in the fifth,  Hader struck out five over two scoreless innings and Freddy Peralta pitched the ninth for his first save as Milwaukee avoided a three-game sweep and ended a five-game losing streak against Cincinnati.  With two on and two out in the fifth inning, Reds left-hander Amir Garrett walked Christian Yelich to load the bases.  Grandal grounded a 3-2 fastball into left field, scoring two and putting the Brewers up.  Freddy Peralta,  pitched the ninth for his first save. Peralta has not allowed a run in his last five games, striking out 12 over 6 1/3 innings.  Josh Van Meter hit his second homer and Joey Votto and Scooter Gennett had RBI hits to help Cincinnati build a 4-2 lead against starter Jhoulys Chacin, who hasn’t won since April 30th and was pulled after three innings with right ribcage discomfort. Braun kept Milwaukee close with a two-run shot in the first, his 15th homer of the season.  Matt Albers (5-3) got one out for the win. Reds right-hander Lucas Sims (1-1), making his second start of the season and his first since May 28, gave up five runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, including the homers by Braun and Hiura. He retired 10 straight batters between the two home runs.  The Brewers are off today before opening a weekend series at home Friday night against the Cubs.   Gio Gonzalez, who’s 2-1, will start for Milwaukee against Kyle Hendricks, who’s 7-8.  First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Wednesday, the Cubs beat the Giants 4-1 and the Cardinals pounded the Pirates 14-8. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by a half-game and the Brewers by two games.

Matt LaFleur opened his first training camp as Packers head coach Wednesday by saying the offense is still a “work in progress.”  LaFleur said he will continue working to figure out what this team does best before it opens the season Sept. 5th  on the road against rival Chicago. The Packers have their first scheduled practice today and open their preseason slate against Houston on Aug. 8 at Lambeau Field. The two teams will hold joint practices Aug. 5-6.

On the eve of the start of training camp practice the Green Bay Packers announced the surprise release of veteran defensive lineman Mike Daniels.  Daniels’ 2018 season was shortened due to a foot injury which caused him to miss the remaining six games.  The decision to release Daniels allows Green Bay to save more than $8 million in cap space.  Daniels was drafted in 2012 and played seven seasons with Green Bay.
