Letter For Ripon Recycling Fee Proposal Approved

The Ripon Common Council this week approved a letter that will go out with sewer and water bills. It details how residential property owners would be affected by a proposal to add the cost of recycling as a line item to property tax bills.  Council members added a few minor changes before approving the letter. This year the city’s contract with Advanced Disposal for curbside collection of recyclables went up by $30,000. The monthly fee would be $3.50 per housing unit for single family residences, and two to four unit dwellings, and buildings used as churches. The fee would go on the annual property tax bill. The city has been subsidizing the cost of recycling with General Fund tax dollars, but can no longer afford to do so. State law mandates recycling and the availability of recycling.

Oshkosh Transportation Fee Shot Down

The Oshkosh City Council Tuesday night voted down a proposal to replace special assessment fees with a citywide transportation fee. The vote was 4 to 3 against the measure. The city needs to come up with $3.25 million for road construction. That’s currently paid through special assessments. The fee would have spread the cost out to property owners citywide. The fee would have cost residential and non-residential property owners $4.50 per month, per unit.

RASD Heart Safe Status

Ripon Area School District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says a lot of people deserve credit for their schools attaining Heart Safe Schools Status by Project ADAM. New school nurse Bonnie Fischer wanted to see them get the status. Each of the school buildings got training and additional AEDs were purchased with the help of local sponsors. Whitrock says in addition to training staff were drilled. “The staff not only went through training, but they have actually done some drills to really look at their response time and their ability to get the equipment to the scene to a person who might be in need. So we are excited and proud for that and we hope that it is one of those trainings that you hope you will never need.” Project ADAM is named after 17-year-old Adam Lemel who was playing basketball in Whitefish Bay in 1999 when he suffered cardiac arrest, collapsed and died. His parents and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin started the program in his memory.

Blue Green Algae Season

Last week’s hot and humid weather and similar weather coming up are prime conditions for the growth of Blue-Green algae on area lakes and water bodies. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it can look like mats floating on the surface of the water, paint or just scummy. It varies in color and can be toxic to pets and cause blisters or rashes if it comes into contact with your skin. She recommends washing thoroughly with soap and water if you get any of it on you while you are in the water. She says watch your dog closely if you suspect Blue-Green algae in water. “Watch what your pet does when they are in the water if the water looks funny keep them out too. If they happen to just jump in try to get them cleaned off as quickly as possible so they don’t have the opportunity to lick their fir right when they get out.” She says if you get sick from suspected Blue-Green algae seek medical attention right away. If you suspect you have been poisoned, but aren’t sure call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

F 35 Fighter Jet Featured At AirVenture

Always a draw for the crowds at EAA AirVenture is the fighter jets and one of those being featured this year is the F-35. It has a top speed of 1,200 mile an hour or Mach 1.6. It has machine guns, bombs and missiles and is capable of air-to-air or air-to-ground fighting. Air Force Technical Sergeant Michael Coutre is a crew chief. He’s from Vermont, but is stationed in Arizona. He says he will be learning how to fly the F-35 himself. “I just picked up two months ago to become an F-35 pilot for Vermont Air National Guard so I will be heading to training next year to start my journey as an Air Force pilot.” Coutre says AirVenture is one of about 20 airshows they will be doing this year, but he is very impressed with what is going on at the annual show in Oshkosh.
