After Christian Yelich helped give the Milwaukee Brewers a big early lead, Josh Hader preserved the win that nearly got away. Hader struck out Ozzie Albies with two outs and the tying run on third in the ninth inning to save the 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Yelich’s solo homer in the sixth inning was his 34th and tied the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger for the major league lead. It was Yelich’s third home run in four games. Trailing 5-0, the Braves rallied with two runs in the eighth on Josh Donaldson’s two-run homer and two runs in the ninth on his two-run single. Pinch-hitters Charlie Culberson and Johan Camargo led off the ninth with singles. With two outs, Freddie Freeman struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but reached first base after the ball got away from Manny Pina and Pina committed an error with his throw to first. Donaldson then hit a two-run single to make it 5-4 before Hader struck out Albies and earned his 21st save. The Brewers jumped out to an early lead on Piña’s two-run homer in the second inning. Yelich made it 3-0 in the sixth before Keston Hiura and Piña added RBI hits later in the inning to make it 5-0. Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson (5-2) gave up only one hit, a double to Brian McCann in the second inning, in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. Dallas Keuchel allowed five runs, four earned, in 5 2/3 innings. After giving up the home run to Piña, Keuchel (3-3) retired 11 of the next 13 batters. But the Brewers got to him in the sixth, pushing the lead to 5-0 before he was pulled. The Brewers hit the road and play at Arizona tonight. Zach Davies, who’s 7-2, faces the Diamondbacks Merrill Kelly, who’s 7-9. First pitch is at 8:40 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
In other Brewers news, LHP Gio Gonzalez, after two rehab starts, will start for Milwaukee on Saturday against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. RHP Adrian Houser moves to the bullpen. RHP Jimmy Nelson will also begin a rehab assignment at Class A Wisconsin on Sunday.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Wednesday, the Cubs beat the Reds 5-2 and the Cardinals edged the Pirates 6-5. The Cubs lead the Brewers by 2 ½ games and the Cardinals by three in the division.
After rain pretty much cancelled any practice Wednesday, the British Open is underway at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland.
Since the 2009-10 season high school basketball teams have played a 22-game regular season, but that will change after next year. This offseason, the WIAA Board of Control voted to add two more games to the regular season for only varsity teams and for the most part it has been well received. For 10-team conferences the additional games allows a chance to see more non-conference opponents. Under the 22-game schedule, teams from 10-team conferences have just four non-conference games as they have 18 conference games. With a 24-game schedule, that moves to six. Most coaches think it could lead to more tournaments during the holiday season.
To mark the team’s 100th season, the Green Bay Packers are throwing a birthday party. Fans of all ages are invited to the Sunday, Aug. 11 bash inside the Lambeau Field Atrium from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature free birthday cupcakes, public screenings of the first episode of the Legacy documentary and a chance to win prizes. Fans can also get their green thumbs on commemorative Lambeau Field Seed packets, containing the same grass seed that grows on the field. The first 5,000 fans at the atrium on Aug. 11 will receive seed packets for free, with one in every 50 packets autographed by one of the following players: Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Kenny Clark, Jaire Alexander, Blake Martinez, head coach Matt LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst or Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. Seed packets can be purchased later for $5 at the Packers Pro Shop, with all proceeds going to benefit the American Red Cross. The seed packets were assembled by ASPIRO in Green Bay, which provides jobs and opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
