Mets rookie Pete Alonso outlasted a worn-down Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round of the All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday night to win $1 million — nearly double his 2019 salary. Alonso somehow had enough to edge Guerrero, who hit 91 homers but ran out of gas in the last round following an epic semifinal matchup against Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson. Needing 23 homers to beat Guerrero, Alonso connected for a homer to left-center before flipping his bat high into the air and hugging his pitcher, cousin Derek Morgan. Alonso was then swarmed by the NL All-Stars who were treated to a power display unlike any in the event’s history. Alonso is the second rookie to win, following Aaron Judge in 2017. He’s also the first Mets player to win the derby outright. Darryl Strawberry shared the title with Wally Joyner in 1986. Alonso has hit 30 home runs this year and will play in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.
The Milwaukee Brewers are gearing up for the 2019 All-Star game at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. This year Mike Moustakas, Yasmani Grandal, Josh Hader, Brandon Woodruff and Christian Yelich will take part in the midsummer classic tonight. Yelich was selected to participate in the annual home run derby, but dropped out due to back tightness.
The state Department of Natural Resources is recommending that hunters in parts of western Wisconsin be required to have deer they shoot during the gun season this fall inspected for chronic wasting disease. CWD affects deer’s brains, causing them to grow thin, act abnormally and eventually die. Wisconsin Public Radio reports that the agency’s Chippewa Valley CWD Advisory Team of hunters suggested the testing orders in six townships in Eau Claire, Dunn and Pepin counties. Former Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s administration was wary of addressing CWD during his tenure out of fear for angering deer hunters. But CWD has been costly for deer farmers in recent years. In 2018, state and federal officials paid Wisconsin deer farmers more than $330,000 in compensation after wiping out herds they feared were CWD-infected.
Thanks to the Green Bay Packers, the Titletown District is looking a little greener. In partnership with Essity and Green Bay Packaging, the “First Downs for Trees” program planted its first tree in the shadows of Lambeau Field. The program plants trees every year throughout the community to reduce the team’s carbon footprint when it travels to away games during the football season. This year, the program donated 437 trees to 16 communities, including: Allouez, Ashwaubenon, Bellevue, Brown County, De Pere, Green Bay, Hobart, Howard, Lawrence, Ledgeview, Morrison, Oneida Tribe, Pulaski, Scott, Suamico and Wrightstown. Packers president and CEO, Mark Murphy, says in the program’s nine years, it has planted more than 5,000 trees, making a big impact on the community. According to the Packers, those 5,144 trees provide total lifetime benefits of $24.8 million through stormwater runoff reduction, CO2 reduction, energy savings, air quality improvement and property value increase for the community of Northeast Wisconsin.
After Sunday’s walk-off base hit, Timber Rattlers shortstop Brice Turang was promoted to the Advanced A affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats. Brewers GM David Stearns visited the Fox Cities Stadium last week and took notice of Turang’s talent. The 2018 first rounder was a starter for the Western Division in the Midwest League All-Star game.
