Sports from Wayne Mausser

Luis Castillo tuned up for his first All-Star Game with an absolute gem. Castillo struck out nine while pitching one-hit ball into the eighth inning, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the slumping Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Thursday.  Cincinnati won for the fourth time in five games. Jesse Winker went 3 for 3 and scored the only run on Yasiel Puig’s first-inning single. Castillo was winless in three previous starts against Milwaukee this year, but he was terrific this time around. He was working on a no-hitter before rookie Keston Hiura singled with one out in the seventh.  Castillo (8-3), who pitched seven sparkling innings in a 1-0 loss to Milwaukee on April 3, might have gone the distance if not for a 69-minute rain delay with two out in the eighth inning.  Milwaukee dropped the last three games of the four-game set. It hasn’t scored in the last 23 innings. Christian Yelich started the ninth with a double off Raisel Iglesias for the Brewers’ second hit. But Iglesias then retired three in a row for his 16th save, helped by left fielder Phillip Ervin’s tumbling catch against the wall on Mike Moustakas’ foul ball.  Milwaukee wasted a solid start by Brandon Woodruff (10-3), who permitted seven hits, struck out six and walked none in six innings.  Winker led off the first with a double to right. After Joey Votto singled, Puig singled up the third-base line to give Cincinnati the lead.  The Brewers move on to Pittsburgh for a weekend series.  RHP Zach Davies (7-2) will go for the Brewers against Pirates lefty, Stephen Brault, who’s 3-1. Davies is  2-0 in three starts against the Pirates this season.  First pitch is at 6:05 and the game can be heard on AM1100/;98.3FM, WISS.

In other games in the N.L. Central on Thursday, the Cubs pounded the Pirates 11-3 and St. Louis edged Seattle 5-4.   The Cubs and Brewers are tied for lead in the division while the Cardinals are 1 ½ games out, Pittsburgh is 3 games back and Cincinnati is 3 ½ games behind.

In other Brewers news, Milwaukee optioned right-hander Aaron Wilkerson to Triple-A San Antonio and brought up right-hander Deolis Guerra.  Ryan Braun did not start after getting hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game. Braun also had a sore knee after sliding into the wall while catching a foul ball on Tuesday.

One year after Yu Liu shot her lowest round on the LPGA Tour at Thornberry Creek of Oneida, she tied the course record with a 10-under 62 for a one-shot lead in the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic. It was nice for just about everyone on a rain-softened course in which nearly half of the 140-player field shot in the 60s. Liu, a 23-year-old from China, had a one-shot lead over Jeongeun Lee and Yealimi Noh, who only got into the tournament through Monday qualifying.  Sung Hyun Park, who won last week in Arkansas to return to No. 1 in the world, opened with a 65.

The Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams and his wife announced they are expecting a baby girl in September 2019.  Adams posted on Instagram July 4 about the news.  Players including former Packer Eddie Lacy congratulated him on the announcement.

In Northwoods League baseball last night, the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders pounded the Green Bay Booyah, 15-2.  The Dock Spiders host the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.
