FDL Man Facing Charges After Fighting With Police Officers
A 61-year-old Fond du Lac man is facing a number of charges for getting into a slow speed chase and later physically fighting with police officers early Wednesday morning. The man was spotted near Lakeside Park after sending text messages indicating he was armed and suicidal. A high risk traffic stop failed to stop the man who drove to his home and tried to enter his residence. He was taken into custody and fought with officers acting violently as he was placed in the back of a squad car. A handgun was found in his vehicle. He’s being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail and is facing a number of charges including bail jumping, felon in possession of a firearm, and resisting arrest.
Dodge County Jail Walkaway Gets A Year In Prison
The 39-year-old Portage woman who failed to return from a work release program while serving time at the Dodge County Jail has been sentenced to a year in prison. Jennifer Petersen pleaded guilty this week to a felony escape charge stemming from the February escape. She was serving a nine month sentence for theft and had a little over six weeks to go on her sentence when she walked away from the jail. In addition to the prison sentence she will be placed on extended supervision for one year and on probation for three years.
State Senate Approves Budget
Following the State Assembly’s lead the State Senate Wednesday passed the State Budget by a 17 to 16 vote. Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac says, “The hardworking families of Wisconsin will experience the successes of this budget for years to come. I am proud of the historic and responsible investments we are making in education, healthcare and transportation.” State Senator Lena Taylor of Milwaukee voted against it asking, “How do you rationalize continued underfunding of special education, refusal of Medicaid expansion, cheating in redistricting maps, and indifference to access to safe water?” The budget now moves on to Governor Evers.
Assembly Budget Approval
State Representative Joan Ballweg was among the Republican lawmakers who voted for the state budget when the Assembly passed the proposed budget on a 60 to 39 vote Tuesday. The state lawmaker from Markesan says among other things it includes a large investment in K-12 education funding, maintains a large rainy day fund, and cuts income tax by $500 million. Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh voted against the budget. He says Republicans turned Governor Ever’s budget, The People’s Budget, into a budget full of missed opportunities.
Corrections Overtime Costs
State Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling says Governor Evers will be taking a look at overtime costs for state prisons. She says corrections officers have had to put in the time because of staffing vacancies. “We have high vacancies within our prison staffing levels. We’re seeing high overtime in those areas and so how we can work with those institutions and the new Secretary of Corrections.” She says Secretary-designee Kevin Carr will have to meet with prison wardens and corrections officers to see what can be done. Shilling says it’s all about making the institutions safer for the people that work there and the inmates.
Lt Governor Criticized Over Travel Expenses
State Republicans are having a field day criticizing Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes over unpaid parking tickets and property taxes in Milwaukee. Rohn Bishop is the chairman of the Republican Party of Fond du Lac County. He says Barnes has racked up over $220,000 in costs having the State Patrol driving him around the state. “Well then we came to find out the reason he had the State Patrol drive him around is because he never paid a bunch of parking tickets he had in Milwaukee and his vehicle registration was revoked so can’t own a car at the moment.” Barnes also owes over $2,200 on his 2018 property taxes on his Milwaukee condo. Barnes told a Milwaukee TV station last week that money was on the way. He also paid the overdue fines on the parking tickets after he learned a newspaper was looking into it.
Ripon Summer Swim Program
Ripon Area Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says they are really proud of the revamped program they have for the High School swimming pool this summer. She says Ripon College Head Men and Women’s Swim Coach Ryan Goggans has taken over the program. Lifeguards went through a boot camp before the program kicked off this summer. “Our lifeguards, 24 of them, were part of a boot camp getting in there and really learning about teaching lessons and then we kicked off our summer swimming lessons program as well as our open swim.” She invites families to take a look at their renovated pool. Schedules for open swim, adult water aerobic classes, adult lap swim and a link to sign up for swimming lessons can be found on the district’s website.
