Jhoulys Chacin returned to the starting rotation for the Brewers Monday night but the Crew dropped a 2-0 game to the Padres to start a three-game series at Petco Park. San Diego scored single runs in the first and third innings and then held on. Manny Machado hit his 14th homer in the third inning for the Padres. Elsewhere in the N.L Central on Monday, the Reds nipped the Astros 3-2, St. Louis shutout Miami 5-0, and Pittsburgh at Washington was rained out. The Cubs had the day off. The Brewers lead the Cubs by a half-game and the Cardinals by 2 ½.
The Green Bay Packers players are off until the team reports for training camp on July 24th with practices starting on Thursday, July 25.
The Packers have not announced the full training camp schedule but we now know the dates for the Packers-Houston Texans team joint practices.
The Texans’ team website released the dates of the schedule joint practices: Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6th. The two teams will play each other in the Packers first preseason game on Thursday, August 8 at Lambeau Field.
The Packers haven’t had another team in for joint practices since 2005, when then-coach Mike Sherman, in his final year, brought the Buffalo Bills to town for several practices and to scrimmage on Family Night. The Texans have held joint practices every year under Coach Bill O’Brien. This will give a chance for Wisconsin native and former Badger standout J.J. Watt to return to his home state to practice in front of friends and family.
Another Wisconsin connection, the Texans second round draft OT Max Scharping grew up in Green Bay and went to Green Bay Southwest.
Longtime Green Bay Packers trainer Pepper Burruss is retiring. The team says his on-field work ended with the Packers’ recent minicamp. Burruss, 65, has spent 42 years working in the NFL, the last 26 with the Packers. His career began in 1977 with the New York Jets. That’s where he met Ron Wolf, who would go on to become the Packers’ general manager. Wolf hired Burruss in 1992 to replace retiring Packers trainer Dominic Gentile. Burruss was promoted to director of sports medicine administration four years ago, with Bryan Engel taking over as head athletic trainer. Burruss is credited with modernizing the Packers’ medical facilities and practices.
The state Department of Natural Resources says hunters killed about the same number of turkeys during the spring season as they did last year. DNR officials say a preliminary count shows hunters killed 38,556 turkeys this spring. They took 38,885 birds last spring. The agency authorized 213,078 hunters, up slightly from 212,781 in 2018. Southwestern Wisconsin’s Zone 1 yielded the most turkeys, with hunters taking 10,334 birds. Mark Witecha is a DNR wildlife ecologist. He says toms were less responsive to calls in the early and middle portions of the season this year.
