Eric Thames and Jesús Aguilar homered to help the Milwaukee Brewers avoid a sweep with a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. Christian Yelich had two doubles, extending his season-high hitting streak to 13 games. The reigning NL MVP is batting .472 (25 for 53) with five homers over that stretch.

Matt Albers (3-2) pitched the fifth for the win, allowing just one inherited baserunner to score after relieving Chase Anderson with the bases loaded and no outs. Anderson gave up three runs in four-plus innings.  Brandon Belt’s sacrifice fly off Albers closed the Giants to within 5-3. Albers, Junior Guerra, Jeremy Jeffress and Josh Hader combined for five shutout innings of two-hit ball in relief for the Brewers. Hader pitched a perfect two final innings, striking out three to get his 17th save in 18 chances.

Thames’ homer, his 10th of the season, off Giants starter Jeff Samardzija (3-6) in the fifth gave the Brewers a 4-2 lead. Samardzija gave up four runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings. The 34-year-old threw 114 pitches and took the loss to drop to 3-6. Aguilar hit a pinch-hit homer off Giants reliever Derek Holland leading off the sixth to make it 5-3.

The Brewers took an early lead on run scoring singles from Yasmani Grandal in the first inning and Ben Gamel in the second. The Giants tied it in the second, when Evan Longoria’s leadoff triple started a two-run inning. Yelich’s double made it 3-2 in the fourth.  Brewers second baseman Mike Moustakas had one hit, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.  The Brewers had lost four of their previous five..  The Giants had their season-high four-game winning streak snapped as they concluded their homestand at 5-3.

Brewers: RHP Jhoulys Chacin (3-7, 5.74 ERA) will come off the injured list (lower back strain) to start tonight’s series opener in San Diego.  The Padres will counter with lefty Joey Lucchesi, who’s 5-4.  First pitch is at 9:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Sunday, the Reds beat the Rangers 11-3, the Cardinals nipped the Mets 4-3, Pittsburgh slipped past Miami 5-4 and the Cubs lost last night to the Dodgers 3-2.  The Brewers lead the Cubs in the division by a game and the Cardinals by 3 ½.

Gary Woodland denied Brooks Koepka’s bold bid at history and made U.S. Open memories of his own Sunday with two clutch shots, a birdie putt on the final hole and that silver trophy in his hands at Pebble Beach.  Koepka, trying to match a 114-year-old record with his third straight U.S. Open, kept the pressure on until the very end. Woodland was just as unflappable and got better with each big moment he faced, whether it was a 3-wood from 263 yards or a lob wedge from the putting surface that will take its place with other big moments on the 17th hole of Pebble Beach.  Needing three putts to win, Woodland finished in style with a 30-foot birdie putt for a 2-under 69, giving him the lowest 72-hole score in six U.S. Opens at Pebble Beach and a three-shot victory over Koepka.

In the Women’s World Cup, Carli Lloyd scored a pair of goals  to lead the defending champions to a 3-0 victory over Chile. The win pushed the United States into the round of 16.  She nearly got another hat trick — which would have made her the first player with two in the World Cup — but her penalty kick in the 81st minute went wide left. The score could have been worse for Chile without unshakable goalkeeper Christiane Endler, who finished with six saves and fended off a flurry of U.S. shots in the second half. Endler was named player of the match.  The United States plays Sweden on Thursday to wrap up the group stage. It is the first meeting between the two teams since Sweden ousted the Americans from the quarterfinals at the 2016 Olympics.

General Manager of the Green Bay Packers, Brian Gutekunst announced running back Kapri Bibbs was released Friday.

The Packers claimed Bibbs off of waivers from the Washington Redskins on Dec. 17, 2018.

Bibbs played the final two games for Green Bay in the 2018 season.

Julie Heinz-Johnson, former athletic director, legendary Red Hawks Women’s Basketball Coach, and a beloved ambassador for Ripon College, passed away Thursday, June 13, in Ripon at the age of 53.

Johnson arrived at Ripon College as a 24-year-old basketball coach and exercise science teacher in 1990, after serving as assistant women’s basketball coach for South Dakota State University. She stayed at Ripon her entire career, serving as professor and chair of exercise science and head coach of golf, softball, and, most notably, women’s basketball. In 2010, she became the college’s first-ever female athletic director.

During her illustrious career, she led the Red Hawks Women’s Basketball team from 1990-2013, to a career record of 303-237 (.561) becoming the program’s winningest coach and one of only four coaches in Midwest Conference history to record more than 300 career victories. She was also one of four coaches to win at least 200 conference games. Johnson’s basketball teams won four MWC Championships and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all four of those years (1996, 2004, 2005 and 2009). She coached four All-Americans, five All-Region performers, three MWC Players of the Year, and 41 all-conference selections. She was named MWC Coach of the Year four times (1995, 2004, 2005 and 2009), and NCAA women’s basketball Central Region Coach of the Year in 2004.

In recognition of her significant contributions, this March Ripon College renamed the basketball court in her honor. The new “Johnson / Gillespie Court” was unveiled during a private ceremony for Julie, attended by her family and more than 50 of her former players and coaches.

Johnson is survived by her husband Steve and their son Hunter.

A public celebration of life service will be held on campus at the Willmore Center, Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m. with a special visitation just prior from 4-6 p.m.
