It was a strange night for the Brewers. Hitters struck out 24 times, including one stretch where they whiffed six times in a row. They also left numerous runners in scoring position but in the end still won the game, 6-3 in 14 innings over the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Milwaukee scored all but one of their runs on homers. Then, they emptied their bullpen and found a way to silence one of the American League’s best offenses for nearly seven straight innings.
Chrisitan Yelich, who had two h its to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, led off the 14th with a base hit and after Ryan Braun lined out to right, Mike Moustakas crushed a first pitch fastball 435 feet to the seats in right center field. It was the 21st homer of the season for Moose.
Fifteen of the Brewers’ 24 strikeouts were against Astros starter Justin Verlander, which took some of the shine off the three solo homers they managed off the ace right-hander. Braun hit a two-out shot on the first pitch in the first inning, and Yasmani Grandal led off the second with a homer to right on an 0-2 slider, the first Verlander slider to leave the park this season. The Astros took a 3-2 lead off Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff before Eric Thames hit an opposite field homer in the seventh. Woodruff went seven innings giving up three runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three. Adrian Houser pitched two innings and picked up the win to improve to 2-1. Cionel Perez took the loss and drops to 1-1.
The Brewers are off today before opening a weekend series against the Giants in San Francisco Friday night. Milwaukee remains a half-game ahead of the Cubs in the N.L. Central. The Cubs pounded Colorado Wednesday, 10-1. Elsewhere in the division, the Reds beat the Indians 7-2, the Marlins shut out the Cardinals 9-0 and the Braves edged the Pirates 8-7.
In golf, the U.S. Open, the third Major of the year, gets underway today in Pebble Beach. All of golf’s big names are competing, including Phil Michelson, a sentimental favorite, who is hoping to win his first U.S. Open to complete the Grand Slam.
Ryan O’Reilly scored for the fourth straight game and rookie Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday night to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins and their first NHL championship. Alex Pietrangelo added a goal and an assist and Brayden Schenn and Zach Sanford also scored for St. Louis. The Blues woke up on New Year’s morning with the worst record in the league but won 30 of their final 49 regular-season games and soared through the playoffs to reach the final for the first time since 1970. Coach Craig Berube, who took over when Mike Yeo was fired in November, is the fourth coach in the past 11 years hired in midseason to lead his team to the NHL title. Matt Grzelcyk scored the Bruins’ only goal, and Tuukka Rask stopped 16 shots for Boston.

New Packers coach Matt LaFleur is wrapping up his first offseason program this week, before taking a 6 week break before re-convening for training camp in July. He hopes the ground work he has laid down will help pay dividends this fall. So far, the defense is getting the better of the offense. It’s hoped the defense improves over last season.
