Sports from Wayne Mausser

After being humbled by the lowly Miami Marlins two days in a row, the Milwaukee Brewers bounced back Thursday with their usual home run power. Christian Yelich hit his major league-leading 23rd homer and Mike Moustakas added two homers to lead the Brewers to a 5-1 win over the Marlins. The Brewers salvaged the final game of the three-game series after getting outscored a combined 24-3 in the first two games. The Brewers are a percentage point behind the Central-leading Chicago Cubs. The Marlins, with the worst record in the National League, had won seven of nine and 13 of 18 overall. Yelich hit his two-run homer in the first and Moustakas added his first of the game later in the inning to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead. Moustakas homered again in the fourth to make it 4-0. Ryan Braun added an RBI single in the seventh. Freddy Peralta (3-2), making a spot start, struck out nine and gave up one run in six innings. Josh Hader struck out three in 1 1/3 innings for his 14th save in 15 chances. Peralta didn’t allow a ball out of the infield until giving up a leadoff double to Austin Dean in the fourth inning. Then he struck out Garrett Cooper, Brian Anderson and Starlin Castro to leave Dean stranded. Peralta was making his first start since May 13, when he gave up two runs and seven hits in four innings against the Phillies. Peralta, in his second season with Milwaukee, was needed as a starter after Jhoulys Chacín joined Gio González on the IL. It was Peralta’s best outing since his April 3 start against the Reds, when he gave up two hits and struck out 11 in eight shutout innings. Miami’s Caleb Smith (3-4) allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. He has lost four of his past five starts. The Brewers continue their homestand against the Pirates tonight. A pair of right handed pitchers square off as the Brewers Brandon Woodruff, who’s 7-1, goes against Rookie Davis, who has not a decision. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

In other Brewers news, centerfielder Lorenzo Cain, who left in the ninth on Wednesday because of a jammed right thumb, was back in the starting lineup. He went 2 for 3 and scored two runs.

Elsewhere in the N.L Central on Thursday, the Pirates beat the Braves 6-1, the Cardinals over the Reds 3-1 and the Rockies defeated the Cubs 3-1. The Cubs are ahead of the Brewers by a percentage point in the division. The Cardinals are 2 ½ games out, the Pirates 4 behind and the Reds are 6 games out of the lead.

Eight Fond du Lac Dock Spiders players were selected in the recent Major League Baseball draft. Six members of the 2018 team including Jacob Kostyshock, Mitch Ragan, Zach Bryant, Alex Erro, Cole Zabowski, and Zac Taylor were selected by an MLB club while Chris Cornelius and Brandon Wulff, members of the 2017 team, were selected as well. The top-seeded and undefeated Oshkosh North softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 10-0 five-inning win over No. 8 Nicolet in a quarter-finals game at Goodman Softball Complex.

Outfielder Courtney Day was 3-for-3 with two RBI’s. Senior pitcher Sydney Supple allowed a lead-off single to start the game, but then retired 15 straight batters, 12 via strikeout.

North advances to play No. 4 Kenosha Bradford/Reuther in a Friday semifinal.

Game four of the NBA finals continues tonight as Golden State hosts Toronto. The Raptors won Wednesday night 123-109 to take a 2-1 lead over the Warriors in the best of seven game series. Meanwhile, Warriors guard Klay Thompson, who sat out game three, will play tonight. The status for Kevin Durant will be sidelined for game four.

Meanwhile, the NBA and the Golden State Warriors today announced that Warriors investor Mark Stevens has been banned from attending NBA games and Warriors team activities for one year and has been fined $500,000 for pushing and directing obscene language toward the Toronto Raptors’ Kyle Lowry during Game 3 of The Finals last night.  The incident occurred with 10:37 remaining in the fourth quarter when Lowry dived into the spectator stands while chasing a loose ball.

Stevens’ ban is effective immediately and carries through the 2019-20 NBA season, including the postseason.
