Veterans Educational Benefits
Waushara County Veterans Service Office Bill Rosenow says veterans are entitled to educational benefits they may not be aware of. There’s all kinds of federal education benefits available. Due to some recent law changes that took effect retroactively to 2013 I believe those federal benefits are extended longer.” He says the state offers a great benefit called the Wisconsin G.I.Bill. It allows veterans to attend a University of Wisconsin college or technical college for up to 8 semesters or 120 credits and they waive the tuition and segregated fees. He says there is no degree cap or time limit for that state program. Rosenow says more than 3,000 veterans live in the county and thousands more in surrounding counties.
ThedaCare Cancer Survivorship Bell Being Moved
Cancer survivors and their families are invited to a special ceremony at ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center in Appleton this afternoon. The survivorship bell is being moved to the center. The bell was donated by Miron Construction. The ceremony is from 4 to 4:30 pm. Dr. Anthony Phillips, a ThedaCare hematology and oncology specialist, says the ringing of the survivorship bell is a ritual for many patients on their last day of cancer treatment. “As originally intended it signifies the end of therapy so for a lot patients and families they do wrap a lot into it. Typically families will come and be with their family member for the last day of treatment and ring that bell.” There’s also a dinner at Liberty Hall at 5 pm with a motivational speaker. Those who would like to attend should call 920-364-3500 to make reservations. Sunday was National Cancer Survivors Day. There are 15 million cancer survivors in the U.S.
