Devin Smeltzer added another chapter to his inspiring comeback story, pitching six shutout innings in his big league debut and helping the Minnesota Twins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 Tuesday night. Diagnosed with a grapefruit-sized cancerous tumor against his bladder when he was just 9 years old, Smeltzer wasn’t deterred in his goal to reach the majors. The 23-year-old got his chance this week after the Twins put pitcher Michael Pineda on the injured list with right knee tendinitis. Smeltzer allowed three hits, walked none and struck out seven. Showing a funky, three-quarter style delivery, the lanky left-hander threw 69 pitches, 53 for strikes. Smeltzer left with the game scoreless and got a no-decision

In nine combined starts at Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Rochester, Smeltzer was 3-2 with a 1.15 ERA. Facing the Brewers, he retired his final eight Brewers, striking out Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich to end the sixth. Smeltzer danced around damage in the second, third and fourth innings when, with a runner on base, the final out each inning was a catch on the warning track. The Twins got Smeltzer last July in a trade that sent second baseman Brian Dozier to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Eddie Rosario homered and Max Kepler added a two-run double for Minnesota, which has won 12 of 14 and has the best record in the majors. Keston Hiura and Yasmani Grandal homered late for the Brewers.

Matt Magill (1-0) tossed a scoreless inning and Ryne Harper got the final out for his first career save. Milwaukee starter Zach Davies allowed five hits and struck out four in six shutout innings. The Brewers are off today before beginning a four-game series at Pittsburgh on Thursday.

In other Central Division games on Tuesday, the Reds beat the Pirates 11-6, the Phillies nipped the Cardinals 4-3 and the Astro’s beat the Cubs 9-6. The Cubs lead the Brewers by a half-game in the division while Pittsburgh and St. Louis are four behind and Cincinnati is five games back.

One week after receiving D3baseball.com All-Region honors, Ripon College senior catcher Michael Barnes and teammate, junior pitcher Brice Swick were each named Second Team All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The announcement was made Tuesday. That duo was two of six players from the Midwest Conference named to one of the ABCA’s three All-Central Region teams.

Barnes, who was named MWC North Player of the Year earlier this month, is making his first career All-Region appearance. He is the only player in the MWC with a batting average above .400 this season, batting .417 with a conference-best on-base percentage of .497.

Swick also is making his first career All-Region appearance. An Exercise Science major from Kimberly, Wis., Swick finished the season with a conference-best seven wins, which is tied for ninth in program history for a single season. He also ranked second in the MWC in both strikeouts (73) and ERA (1.84), which ranks third and 11th, respectively, in program history. Swick was especially impressive down the stretch, winning his final five starts of the season. In his final 38 innings, Swick recorded an ERA of 0.47, while striking out 39 batters (9.2 K/9). He also registered a WHIP of 0.92, while giving up just two extra base hits during that span.

The University of Wisconsin said Monday assistant men’s basketball coach Howard Moore was up and walking at a hospital after a weekend automobile wreck in Michigan that killed his wife and daughter.

The school also said Moore’s son, Jerell, had been released from a hospital and was in the care of family.

Moore’s wife, Jennifer, and daughter Jaidyn were killed early Saturday in the crash on the M-14 highway in Washtenaw County. Authorities said a 23-year-old woman was driving west in the eastbound lanes of the Detroit-area freeway when she struck a car head-on that was carrying the Moore family. The woman was also killed.

Moore, a Chicago native, played at Wisconsin from 1990-95 and was head coach at Illinois-Chicago before returning to his alma mater during the 2015-16 season.
