Two Arrested For Shootings In FDL

Fond du Lac Police arrested two Fond du Lac men Wednesday night in connection with shooting incidents that occurred in the city last month. A 29-year-old man is facing endangering safety by reckless use of a weapon and criminal damage to property charges and an 18-year-old man for being party to those crimes. Both are being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail pending formal charges. During the shootings on April 25th and 26th police discovered damage to a vehicle on a street and to a home. No one was injured in either shooting.

Accident At United Cooperative In Horicon

Flight for Life flew one person from the scene of an accident at United Cooperative in Horicon Wednesday afternoon. An employee fell from the roof of a building to concrete below. Horicon Fire and EMS officials say that person was conscious and alert before they were flown to Aurora Medical Center in Summit. Injuries were believed to be non-life threatening. The building the employee fell from was said to be a pole-shed type structure with a metal roof with a moderate grade.

Former Women’s Prison Guard Convicted Of Sexual Assault

A sentencing hearing will be scheduled for a former correctional officer at Taycheedah Correctional Institution convicted of sexually assaulting an inmate. This week 43-year-old Joseph Kelm of Fond du Lac pleaded no contest to one count of 2nd degree sexual assault by correction staff. Three similar charges were read into the record and dismissed.

Ripon Chamber Official Remains Hopeful About Bank Location

Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith remains optimistic about the chances of Fortifi Bank locating a branch in Ripon. The bank recently changed its mind about locating in the city citing staffing changes. Mansmith says they remain hopeful it will happen some day. “They still are very committed to Ripon and in helping out and doing business here as well and hopefully in due time something does work out with them to be able to locate a facility here.” Fortifi Bank has eight locations including Berlin, Green Bay, Green Lake, Montello, Omro, Waunakee, Westfield, and Winneconne.

Destination Zero Helps Identify People At Risk Of Committing Suicide

The coordinator of a grant program in Fond du Lac County says they are trying to intervene and prevent suicides. Tammy Kohlman the coordinator of the Destination Zero Grant program says suicides were down in the county last year, but typically over the past 15 years the suicide rate per 100,000 people has run higher than the state’s rate and the national rate. “So there really was a need to take a look at why that might be and try and make some changes to turn that number around.” She says the grant helps pay for QPR or Question, Presuade, Refer training for groups that would like to act as gatekeepers helping to prevent suicide. Kohlman notes they are trying to change the system’s response and put policies and procedures in place as a way of getting people connected. The training is free. Unemployment Rates Lower In April

Unemployment rates in the area for the most part dipped below or held just under 3 percent for April. According to federal labor statistics. Fond du Lac County’s jobless rate was 2.1 percent for the month, Dodge and Winnebago counties were both at 2.3 percent, Green Lake and Waushara counties both had 2.9 percent rates, and Marquette County was at 3.1 percent. The cities of Fond du Lac and Oshkosh had unemployment rates of 2.1 and 2.4 percent respectively.
