Appleton Woman Arraigned In Oshkosh Attempted Murder Case
A 25-year-old Appleton woman that allegedly incited a 20-year-old Appleton man to shoot her ex-boyfriend was arraigned in Winnebago County court Monday. Clea Bowden pleaded not guilty to being party to the crimes of attempted first degree intentional homicide and first degree recklessly endangering safety. The charges stem from an incident in the 500 block of Grand Street in Oshkosh on March 24th. According to the criminal complaint Bowden had argued with her ex-boyfriend about how long he had borrowed a car. She allegedly got several people to go to his home where Kyle Wiegand shot the man in the chest. Wiegand told investigators Bowden wanted the man beaten up, scared and wanted to kill him. Wiegand faces similar charges and will be back in court July 2nd for a plea and sentencing hearing.
Youth Vaping A Concern
The Tobacco Prevention and Control Coordinator for the Fond du Lac County Health Department says they’ve done a good job reducing youth tobacco use in the state over the years, but now those kids are turning to electronic smoking devices. Sandy Bernier says there has been an alarming increasing in Fond du Lac in the number of kids using e-cigarettes and vaping over the past five years. “We’ve had I think 157 percent or more for our high school vaping rate and for our middle schools its been over 200 percent. So from 2014 to 2018 we’ve seen a huge increase in youth using these electronic smoking devices.” Bernier says youth have a tendency to follow adults’ examples so when smoking was banned in public places that contributed to a big decrease in cigarette and tobacco use by kids. In 1998 the rate of smoking in high schools was around 30 percent and that has dropped to less than 5 percent now.
Watch Out For Motorcyclists
Town of Ripon Police Captain Howard Stibb urges drivers to be on the lookout as more motorcycles take to the road with improving weather. He notes even though they are required to have their headlight on it is difficult to see that at times especially if they are in a vehicle’s blind spot. “If you’re at a stop sign or if you are going to make turns, turning from one road onto another watch a little bit closer. You may not see that cycle. In cars and trucks there are blind spots when you are making turns.” Some of more serious vehicle versus motorcycle accidents involve vehicles making a left turn that didn’t see an oncoming cycle. According to the state’s Department of Transportation approximately 100 motorcyclists are killed and more than 2,500 injured each year in traffic crashes in Wisconsin.
